    Hi All,

I am planing to buy from UK (I cannot find one in IRL) dedicated skype phone Philips 321.

Does anybody know if it is going to work in Ireland. I am asking about the normal land line part of it as Skype should work without problems ofc.

Is there any difference in standards between UK and Ireland and if they are are they different type of cables or different modulation of the signal?

    Thanks in advance,
    Sebastian

You could try VOIP-SKYPE-V500-DS, from solwise.co.uk/solwise.ie. Its bit cheaper. I haven't tried it yet... but waiting for the delivery.

    Hi ikon

I was thinking of buying the VOIP-SKYPE-V500-DS. I was wondering if you had a chance to try it out. I've tried other skype phones in the past and have had bad luck with them. I would greately appreciate your opinion.

From what i read - if you are aiming for standalone Skype phone which does not require PC to be powered up it is good idea to wait a bit as new generation of those phone should be out soon.

Those on the market are only Linksys (Philips / netgear buys technology from them) and the scandynavian company for phones which you can buy on Skyp webpage.

Correct me if I am wrong.

So phones on the market use 2 - 3 years old technology.

    Cheers

Yeah, I have tried VOIP-SKYPE-V500-DS, it does the Job.

But it has the base station as charger too... but I would prefer to have a separate charger (downstairs). I can't move the router to downstairs. Also I didn't like the look and feel of it. It seems very weak, could break if dropped once. So I returned the Phone.

But it does the job I have to say.

Bit on the pricy side at around 140 euro but there is a Skype phone available now that doesn't require the PC to be powered up. Am debating whether or not to get it to work alongside Digiweb at the moment.

Will let you know if it's ok if we decide to get it.

Got the phone and am well impressed. It's lethal. Just plugged everything in and it works. Real men don't need manuals! No CD's settings or any of that crap. Plug the small base station into the modem and telephone line and Bobs your uncle.
You can put the mobile base station anywhere in the gaff. Cost 127 inc deliver on ebay. Should save the missus 40 Euro per month calling her ma in Espane. So will make our money back shortly.

Reception is better than the VOIP phone connection Digiweb provided, even though we just have a 1 meg connection. I'm giving that old cordless to me auld one. We can still use the Digiweb land line number we got for incoming calls AND outgoing if necassry -1890..., 999 - no bother by just pressing up or down on the new phone before making a call.

When this one is broke will aim to get a Bluface one - they're Irish and calls are a bit cheaper - 1.4 cent per minute. http://www.blueface.ie/shop/shop.aspx?products=hardware. Just got the Skype one coz I was worried about this technology working and we already had an account.

Tell everyone you know to get one of these and we'll be all calling each other for nothing, in no time... sweet as.

    Update on this:

You can get a deal with Skype for about 5 euro a month (discounts with annual subs) for free calls to any landlines in Europe inc. Ireland. We bought one of those no-PC required Skype dualphones and it's saving us a fortune.

Digiweb have some new offer for new custs - 20€ for 3M p/s at 15GB p/month. They give ya a landline number too.
