i am hoping to go back to college in sept to finish a hons degree, it should take me 2 years. i had a certificate in electronic & computer engineering from way back, and i did some work in networking, computer repairs, some small electrical and mechanical work, what will the future hold for me when i finish, what would be the best path for me to take, or what career opportunities will be open to me.I am thinking i want to try something different than being a computer service technician.

if it is an accredited level 8 engineering degree it will take you three more years if you have a cert!

i spoke to the course director and she said 2 years, i go into year 2. skip year 3
placement year, due to my experience, and then 4th year and that's it

you wont get it in 2 years and even if you do you should move into a specific area, such as embedded applications, micro controllers etc.

BEng degrees in Electronics are nothing now to employers

    thanks

You should definitely go back and do it, you will not regret it. I initially done a diploma in Electronic engineering, worked for a year, then went back to do my degree. Then 8 years later went back and done my masters degree. I enjoyed going back to college both times, i found it really interesting after working for a while, i'm sure you would be the same.

I guess getting back to your original question about what you could do when you finish, theres lots of options... the most popular would be:-
    1. Telecoms / Networking
    2. Automation / Controls
    3. Programming / Software
But i wouldn't rule out Electronic design and embedded systems, which is one of most interesting areas IMO.

If year 3 is just work experience then it is a three year degree with work experience in the middle. This is not a level 8 degree. AFAIK these are not available in ireland but are in the UK.But they have a different system as a four year full time over there is an MEng.
Can you link to the course syllabus? You may not be getting what you think you are getting. Remember new BEng(Ord) = old National Diploma

+1 on dublindilbert I did the same.

This mite be slightly off topic but this anyone know of websites like this www.conestogac.on.ca/~renns/Electrical/EEP%20Lab1.pdf with these tpe of experiments?

As in putting some resistors on a breadboard and Q1 measure current drawn from the supply using an ammeter and q2 measure voltage across each resistor?

    Any help greatly appreciated

Just on the Level 8 issue, UCD offer an Honours Degree in Engineering Science (BSc) after 3 years. You have the option then of continuing on to do a masters in a further 2 years (of which some may be spent away at a different university, or getting some practical work experience with a company).
