Beginner golf clubs

I'm a total beginner and need a beginners golf set, bag, shoes. Somebody in work said MacGregor is a good beginner set to go for. I've been told to steer clear of Callaway as they're for more experienced people. What clubs do I need to make sure I have in the bag? I went into McGuirks yesterday but I hadn't a clue what I was looking for. Would it be better/cheaper to buy them online? Will also be looking for a pair of golf shoes. Have lessons sorted. Plan is to play regularly enough. My mates play often enough but I never go as I never got into it mainly because my time is usually taken up playing football. All advice welcome.

Any cavity back irons would be suitable for a beginner.

"Beginner" sets are usually cheap and look good value but after a couple of years you'll be changing them for something better if you have persevered. Don't waste money on a driver or even a 3 wood.......a 5 wood will do you for now.

Most Callaways are suitable for beginner through to experienced player........avoid blades for beginners though.

I'd recommend that you go for group lessons (cheaper than individual ones although not as good). Ask if the teacher can help you pick a set - a 2nd hand set will be much better in the long run as you'll get better quality.

Shoes...........it's hard for me to recommend a cheap pair as I don't buy cheap ones - Footjoy Dryjoys are very good but probably too expensive for a beginner.
