Ok this might have been a stupid thing to do. I've just bought flights for the family to Cuneo in the Italian alps during the Easter holidays.

Any suggestions on where to ski, bearing in mind the date? We are all pretty good skiers,

    hi Eileen

you've picked a great airport to fly into (plenty of choice)

Prato nevoso , Frabosa, Garessio 2000, Limone & Sestriere all pretty close

Limone & Sestriere imho are the only places to consider due to your high mileage
intermediates:). Limone is only about 30Miles from Cuneo (get taxi with kids)with Sestriere about 100 (2hr drive).

Normally, given this choice i'd pick Limone see
www.limonepiemonte.it very easy train transfer (Genoa Line)....
but since your talking about April, italy, in general worries me, except for Cervina, Courmayeur ; France - Val, Tignes & Chamonix Valley

i think head North towards Sestriere which has access to the "Milky Way" (Borgata, Cesana Torinese, Claviere Montgenevre, Sansicario, Sportina and one of my very first trips - Sauze d'oulx

i'm sure the kids (big & small) will enjoy it no matter where they go:D

Thanks for your reply re: Bad Gastein; we're off end of February it's good to go somewhere different

Thanks. We had a look at Limone, but were a bit worried by the height and references to "ropeways" lifts. Sort of implies the lift system is still under construction. Have you skied there? What do you think?

Vars-Risoul is possible as well, IF there is transport to get us there. But it does seem to have good snow.

Failing that, Sestriere is most likely. We'll probably get the train to Turin, and then to Oulx. Do you know if that's the best way?

yep going back 8years, this is a very old resort & quiet, regarding "Ropeway Lifts" are you talking about "Button Lifts"? or that form of torture they use in Soldeu, Andorra for beginners?.....

in limone i remember there was quite a few button lifts but these are fine imho but you could give the tourist office a call most likely they've upgraded these by now (surely).

regarding transport, your talking about a 3 1/2 hour train transfer then a taxi ride to the resort, long journey with kids;)

if it were me, why not wait a while and adopt a wait see you never know the conditions might be okay, and go to Limone, the train journey is a bit too long unless they have nintendo's:D

i found the web cam link for you

Wow, looks good. I want to go skiing NOW....

I've booked an apartment in Sestriere. Being the paranoid type, I didn't fancy waiting until Easter before I started looking for accommodation. As it was, I nearly had a heart attack at some of the prices, but I got a decent looking apartment, so I hope I'm set.

The children are not too bad when travelling by train. As long as they have some way of spending money, they are happy enough.

Do you know if there is a train station in Cuneo airport? Looking at the website, it looks like there is, but I can't find a timetable or even see it on the map.

Eileen to be honest when i was in Limone, i didn't use Cuneo (we used Turin)
and travelled by train (i remember making an honest mistake and buying a ticket and forgetting to valid it on the train station platform) ;) got a right bolicking & i'll never forget it)

i haven't been lucky enough to fly in there yet

anyway here's the link to the airport

You get a shuttle (7euro) to Fossano Station then to Limone (via Cuneo) takes about 1 hour imho the easiest & cheapest way to go.

    it's really weather dependent now

www.aeroporto.cuneo.it (the train link won't work)

    Train: www.trenitalia.com

but since you'll be going onto Sestriere (to Oulx Station) & 30min taxi ride, take into account your return flight times and allow for mishaps along the way.

    Ryanair doesn't wait;)

    Happy Trails

Thanks. I'll let you know how we get on when we come back. We are planning on travelling with hand luggage only, so hopping on and off buses and trains should not be a problem.
