it takes 3hr 15 minutes on the train from edinburgh to inverness

people usually go to inverness to see loch ness or to use the town as a base with which to explore the highlands. there isn't an awful lot in the town of inverness itself, lots of bars and clubs, a nice modern castle, some really good riverside/canal walks and a few hills west of town upon which to hike.

there is plenty in edinburgh and the surrounding areas to keep you busy for 3 days

heading to inverness would take up way too much time, see here for other options though it was written with summer in mind

Great scenery if you do it tho. Gorgeous Country. People can be strange around that part of Scotland tho! (Similar to Bible Country) :p

Inverness itself is not worth a visit, and the drive up the motorway from Edinburgh is not particularly scenic. It is worth going to only to provide a base for travelling west into the hills of Wester Ross, or walking in the Cairngorms to the southeast.

Just back from 4 weeks in inverness on business

as others said, its a quiet enough place with not much on. even the castle is still the district court so you can't really walk around in it! and as a day trip from edinburgh, u wud spend more time travelling than there!
