    Are you:

    1. Bringing it to a main dealer?

    2. Bringing it to independent garage?

    3. Quikfit type place?

    4. Doing it your self?

    5. Doing the rear brake pads too?

Audi bought pads are €70-€80 for a set for the front of the car. It should take 1/2 hour's labour.

So labour can be anything really. Main Dealer €90 per hr. Indy €60 per hr. Of course these are just two garages I know it can go from €50- €120 per hour depending.

Spurious pads come in at about €40

OP, Audi don't make brake pads, there is no such thing as an "Audi" brake pad. In this forum, you'll find loads of uninformed loose talk about "genuine" parts and "spurious parts". These components (brake pads), are made under tender agreement by OEM companies such as Abec, Mintex or Ferodo.

You can buy these parts directly from a motor factor, without having to open your wallet to an authorised dealer.

If anyone is charging you more than 80 Euro for pads, they are robbing you.

I am fully aware that companies like Jurid, ATE, Lockheed, etc. make the pads for car manufacturers. The OP may not be aware of this so on that basis I thought it sufficient to mention that pads supplied from Audi would be €80.
However I feel important to add that it has been my experience that the spurious pads that motor factors supply in this country do not have the same anti squeal coating on the rear of the brake pads.
I went looking for a set of Jurid Rear hand brake shoes in a few motors factors in Cork recently only to be greeted with funny looks. The previous owner of my car fitted Lockheed pads to the front of the car & the squealing was horrendous, I took them off to put copper grease on but it was only a temporary fix. I got genuine pads in the end as any I could find spurious were not or the same quality anti-squeal wise. Now there is no squealing.

Finally, I think Darragh that you are all too quick to jump with your :mad::mad: too to be honest.

Rebel ranter said "Audi bought" pads. What was wrong with this? He gave a clear and fairly accurate price of the pads supplied through dealer or factors. This was a reasonable response as he was also asking the question whether the op was going to take the car to a main dealer to have the work done.

brake pads are easy to change. better off doing that in future to save on those ridiculous labour costs. unless you want to save the local garage from going under of course

I apreciate all your replies which all have good information.

I will be taking it to a local garage as i dont have the time and am under pressure to have it done this week.

I will admit that i know very little about break pads etc, i am hearing a squealing noise coming from one wheel, drivers side. so i presume that the pads need looking at.

Would i be best getting the back two done at the same time or should i just get the problem one fixed.

Cost wise then i guess i am looking at about €70/€80 to get one replaced.

    Thanks again

They should be done in pairs, so just get the front ones done for now. The front pads do the vast bulk of the work of stopping the car, so they don't last nearly as long as the rears.

Is it just BMW that change the rotors aswell as the pads when doing a pad replacement, or do other manufacturers do that to?

You would normally only need to change the rotors (the brake discs) if they have reached the minimum recommended thickness or if they have warped.

Well not on a 7 series anyways, if the pads need changing they change the rotors aswell. Actually now that I think of it they may only do this for the larger models as the heavier engines can cause the front rotors to warp over time. Do Audi or Mercedes do this for the A8s/S-classes?

Cooper Grease should solve the problem, but there are some cheap brands that will squell like a pig no matter what you put on them and Lockheed are one of these. Other wise, Ferodo, Mintex, Apec are fine. I have Ferodo fitted to the front of my Mondeo, 10k klms and no squelling and perfect braking.

So you are looking at big bills every pad change. Sounds like a rip off to me. If they are designed to wear out that quick, there is not alot you can do but I suspect they dont wear out that fast so take it to an indy garage who can then check what the disc (rotor) thickness is compared to minimum allowable thickness and they can then make the decision as to whether discs are required.
In relation to them being warped, well you would know from driving the car if they are warped or not.

What you're saying is all true, its simply BMW that swaps out the discs when changing the pads, I have invoices from previous services that detail as such, plus the guys on bimmerforums say the same thing. However a disc should last the life of two pad changes easy.

Got mine done last week at Mid-West tyres in Limerick.
Considering it's €45 for the 2 front pads for my primera they only charged me €60 in total to change them. So €15 for labour..very good.

Anything higher than around €70 you're being ripped off.
