Does size matter?

I have my pet rabbit (Pancakes) a little over two months now. the cage i bought for her originally was always just a temp cage until she settled down. i began my search for bigger cages when she was comfortable with her new surroundings, but i could not find anything big enough that was in my price range (plus most of the ones that are in the pet shops are too small)

i looked up cages online and i could find good ones but shipping to Ireland was a fortune... i decided to make my own when i heard about NIC (Neat Idea Cubes) but i could not find these anywhere. i came across a child's playhouse in Argos which seemed nice and big (Size (H)115, (W)130, (D)109cm) and would just need a few modifications for bun.

i have it a while now and i thought Pancakes would prefer to have a nice big place to run around when she is not out exercising but she just seems to stay in the one place, she always seemed happy with the other cage running around in it. she gets 8+ hours out of the cage a day but i wanted to get her a bigger house in case she didn't get much exercise one day.

so does size matter? or is she just getting used to it still ?

Don't worry, rabbits can take a little time to get used to their new surroundings. When using a hutch or cage etc. as just a place to sleep and take shelter in so the rabbit can feel secure and safe if they are spooked is that the rabbit can stand up fully in it, can stretch out fully in it and move around comfortably in it. This is for rabbits that have access to the house or a run for a good few hours every day.

For buns that are in a hutch outside for example they need access to a large run and their hutch should be large but with a smaller warmer compartment for sleeping in as it's colder outside and larger spaces loose heat.

Since your bun is inside and has the 8 hours of freedom, the cage would need to be big enough to, as said, enable the rabbit to stand up fully etc.
Although of course the larger the better although it does take them a while to get used to a new space.

The old cage is ok for small to medium rabbits that are allowed a long time out of the cage, but really only big enough for one bunny.
The playhouse is a nice size, very cute, it's just new and the bun will take some time to get used to it, if not done already, pop in a couple of carboard boxes in it for her to hide in then she'll pop in and out of them until she's used to it.

Rabbits can be a little fussy, she sounds like a bit of a diva any piccies of her?

This is my Bun Bun Pancakes, she's quite big so that's why i felt she should have a bigger place to sleep and eat etc.

there was no flooring in the playhouse so i lay down cardboard, a blanket and carpet, i put the base of her old cage in the house and i fill it with hay(this is where she eats drinks goes to the toilet and spends most of her time) and i have her pet carrier in there in case she wants to hide away or climb on, also in the house there's a pet bed cave for her to sleep in, and a sea grass basket to sit in and chew and some toys to play with :D

I hope changing homes hasn't stressed her out too much, hopefully after a while she will get used to it :) thanks so much for your replies :)

oh one more question, do you by any chance know what breed Pancakes is? i kinda think she is a mix but I'm not sure? thanks

I never would have thought of buying a child's playhouse for my bunnies but it's so cute and practical too - thanks for the idea!
Is Pancakes named after the bunny Pancakes off 'The OC'? She looks like her.
