Hi all. Just a quick one. I am originally from Galway but my permanent address for the past 5 years is in Wexford. I am importing a car and would prefer a Galway reg. Can I fill in my parents address on the application form and present it in the Wexford VRO and get a G reg?

Yes you can. Maybe not officially but I know a friend of mind wanted a Dublin reg on his M5 but he lives in Cork. So he did what you want to do. I would have preferred a Cork reg myself personally over a Dublin one. I can understand why you want yours Galway.

I don't see why not. I'd certainly try it. You will get an opportunity to change the address when you tax it online, so you can then change to the Wexford address so that it matches with your insurance. The only possible gotcha might be if they want the address to match the records for your PPS number, but I don't know if they do this.

As a dealer I regularly register imports in the names of buyers, and the name / address details are never queried. A while back I had a girl buying a car who was from Meath and working in Kerry, but she used a friend's address because she wanted a Cork reg !!!

If you are ever unfortunate enough to use the the Dundalk Vrt office (Co. louth) they will insist that you use the address that your PPSN number is registered at! even if the car is NEVER at that address!

Is there much of a problem applying via the post or is it better to bring the car for inspection?

I never heard of anyone registering a used car any other way than going into the office ????

Sometimes they inspect, sometimes they don't, depends on the age and make of the car, and the weather ! Murphy's law says that if you don't bring it with you they will want to inspect it !

I've registered 4 vehicles now using this method...print out the vrt4 form of the revenue.ie website and post it in along with your bank draft!
