    POsts like this are annoying.
Whats wrong with getting out the phone book at ringing your dealer, and provide them with the details(chassis number, and maybe make) so they can give you the price?
anyway they can range from 200-900+vat

It's not your week OP! Around 200-300 Euro for a new starter to be fitted. The problem there is that the armature in the starter motor is not disgaging properly. There is an overrun clutch device in the starter motor that works with the armature and this could also be at end of life. Either way, a new starter would probably resolve the problem. The odd time, this problem can be caused by a defective ignition barrell, but I'd be starting (pardon the pun!), at the starter motor and get that out and inspected and also examine the flywheel ring gear to make sure that excess wear there is not "holding in" the starter armature.

Ha i know ya. So much for me thinking the engine was flooded yesterday. the strange thing is it started a good few time last night on the first turn. Cheers for your advice Darragh29 you have been very helpful the last two days.

Shop around as well OP, as it's the kind of job that the price would vary a lot on, depending on where he new starter motor is bought from, etc. I'm thinking this was the most likely the problem behind the car not starting earlier this week...

    200-300??

I got a starter motor reconditioned for 40 euro in Limerick. 50 max.

They are an awful pain in the hole to take out, there's three bolts on them. And equally a pain to get back in again. There's a sensor clipped into them as well just incase you tackle it yourself.

I wouldn't fit a recon starter motor unless I couldn't get an OEM one like Valeo or a solid brand like that, or possibly Lucas although these are often factory remanufactured.

For the hassle involved in sometimes getting them out and back in, I'd always try to put in a new OEM part, so you can be as confident as you can that it won't be coming back anytime soon for the same problem. I'd have no problem giving a 2 year warranty on a new starter motor, but if it's recon, you could be seeing the same starter motor back for a different problem within a year, depending on what parts were changed when it was reconditioned and a lot of guy doing reconditioning will just repair one fault that caused the starter motor to be removed from the car it was in, they won't change other partially worn components within the starter motor on a pre-emptive basis.

You could recondition it 4-6 times at the cost of a new one.

Just an idea, i will argue no further lol.

As as DIY job, yeah I take your point, but when you're being paid to resolve an issue, it's just too much hassle trying to explain this to a customer and if you fit a recon starter and it starts causing trouble after a few months, no matter how you previously tried to qualify the durability of a recon starter when you first fitted it, if the customer is back after 6 months with all the attendant inconvenience, you've lost credibility and your usually going down the road of providing labour for free on a "goodwill" basis to keep the customer, even though it's not your fault that the starter is acting up again, and your man in the recon shop won't be listening to any talk of a warranty claim, so I just keep it as simple as I can and put in an OEM replacement part wherever I can.
