Got a 01' Corolla, never had any problems with it. although during a service 4 months ago they found a problem that the oil was being burnt 2 fast, think it was the oxygen node...

So, lately every now and then you're driving along and the rev counter goes crazy but your not over-accelerating, just going at a steady pace. then it goes back to normal.

check the oil, water, belt, etc. all seems fine. it's totally random when it happens. Need to do the NCT in the next few weeks so don't know if i should wait and see what happens in the test, as it only happens once in a while, or do i put it in for a service again?

    any advice?

    thanks

I put a 04 Rav4 through the NCT with a very worn clutch a while back, everything was perfect and the tester did not even mention it....guess it depends on how good or bad a day the tester is having!

A worn clutch isn't a fail item, not unless the car cannot actually drive through the test lane! I had a car in for an NCT and also a clutch and I had a problem with the wrong parts coming in for the clutch so we sent the car into the NCT with a worn clutch and I asked the tester if it was an issue and he said not unless they couldn't drive the car into the building...

Having said said that, they can fail any car on the grounds that there is a problem with it that presents a risk to public safety, so if you get a guy having a bad day, blah blah blah.....

NCT tester: "Car Failed. Reason: Owner, when behind wheel, is threat to public safety" :D

    I think it's something like:

    Vehicle system: Clutch/transmission operation.

Defect: Catastrophic defect, unable to proceed with test.

You'll get the same result if they find a coolant leak, they'll end the test immediately because if your head gasket goes on their floor, they are responsible or at least you will say that they are.

brought an old mazda 323 in for NCT 3 years ago in Dublin. The clutch was knackered, it barely made it up hills. The waiting area had a window so you could see them working on it. The tester couldn't drive it out of the rollers because the clutch was so bad, he had to get a push out.

After, I was expecting the worst but he said its not a fail item. Only problem was a cracked indicator :)

I'd break my arse laughing at that scene!
