Madcap Subtitles Suggestion

    Fine Gael MEP Gay Mitchell has come up with the 'wonderful' suggestion that all films screened in Irish cinema's have subtitles in Irish. I watch plenty of subtitled foreign cinema but I'd probably be unwilling to pay to attend a screenings with these unnecessary subtitles. I don't see him getting far with the distributors...

    I love the Irish language but love my Films more.
    This would be crazy to do this.
    It would ruin the cinematic experience.
    I dont mind watching subtitiles but when they are not needed then why distract and take up space on the screen.
    Instead of going to the studios about this why doesnt he try to get more movies filmed in Ireland or try to get more interest in Irish cinema.

    Most kids already know how to read a bit of Irish, the problem is in speaking it. Perhaps Gaylord could lobby for a law that makes impossible to buy tickets or popcorn at the cinema unless you can request through Irish?

    sounds like good idea he only suggest a special week of films like that.

    “This can happen at the theatre also. I attended a Gate Theatre tour production of a Beckett play in Brussels last year which had subtitle screens discreetly placed on either side of the stage.

    wouldn't be any harm to have an occasional pre-arranged showing with irish subtitles, has any hollywood film (perhaps kids movies) had irish dubbing done in time for its cinema showing.

    Occasional pre-arranged showings with Irish subs would be OK, otherwise, just have it as an option upon DVD/BD release (that'd probably make DVD sales in Ireland even more expensive though).

    I can't see this going anywhere, bar what byte suggests about occasional showings. I'd imagine if Irish subtitles were to be introduced to all films, it would take time and money to get it done, meaning delays in releases and that the average filmgoer would have to float the cost. It's completely unnessicary, would be detrimental to most peoples enjoyment of films, and ramp up the cost already overpriced cinema trips.

    Nice sentiment, but completely ridiculous suggestion.
