What would you do? Trade or sell?

At the moment myself and the SO are seriously considering changing car. Current car is just a little bit too small for our needs, needs a little cash injection, so I was thinking that it would be a better idea not to spend money on it and instead take that bit of money (and a little extra) and just move up a few years to something more suitable to our needs.

Now my thinking is go to the UK, pick up a car suited to our needs, and try sell what we currently have privately. SO is thinking very differently, expecting it to be difficult to shift our current car at the moment, so is suggesting that we try trade it against something over here so that we aren't hanging around with the car stuck on our drive. Needless to say there's a little unrest in the homestead at the moment as a result

Current car is a 1995 Golf GTI Colour Concept (the one with the colour matched leather interior). Its nearing 110k miles on the clock, due a timing belt change, and needs a couple of other small jobs done. NCT is valid till September. I'd say €600 max would have it in tip-top condition (after being quoted €280 for the timing belt change). I was thinking of putting it up for sale for maybe €1400 as is and see if I get any offers, but SO thinks I'm being overly optimistic about that price. Personally I'm thinking that a dealer probably wouldn't give us more than €500 off the sticker on any car we might be interested in so financially speaking we'd be better off trying to get rid in a private sale.

Am I mad in my thinking and pricing? Should I give in and accept that SO is right and I'm wrong in my thinking? We're only looking to spend about €3k total (regardless of what the Golf fetches) which in Ireland will get you a '00 Ford Focus 1.4 basic spec, or in the UK could get a '03 Laguna Estate with all the trimmings (VRT included). I know €3k isn't going to get a whole lot of car over here these days so I'm wondering if its madness to even bother trying over here? :(

Anyone any advice or opinions? What would you do in this situation? :o

Getting someone to buy a 95 Golf Gti wont be a problem, you wont get 1400 though.

3k here will get you a fine car, not a slow boring yoke like a 00 1.4 Focus.

btw you get that Laguna for even less here, not that I would buy one.

Cheers for the reply Tony, and the suggestions. :) Sadly all would be ruled out for different reasons as we need a hatch (dog travelling in the boot) and are looking to cut back the costs of running (tax & fuel) which would rule out the Saab. :o

So what do you think is a realistic value for the Golf?

As for the Laguna, I've looked over here and for 3k you might get a high-mileage '02 1.6 Estate with basic spec (currently only 3 cars on Carzone for less than €3k I think). For the same money I could import a '03 1.9 DCi with electric everything, FSH, less mileage and timing belt already changed (and there's no shortage of colour choices either).

I know its not to everyones tastes or approval (including the SO) its just a car I'm using as an example as it demonstrates clearly the value that can be had importing at the moment. It would also fit all the criteria we have set (more practical, large boot, lower running costs, much newer). Plus my father is on his 4th Laguna with no problems with any of them. ;)

...I'd be shocked if any garage would take your Gti, tbh. Nice car and all, but it's getting to the point they don't even have space to park their used ones.........

You certainly would be better off just selling it straight. Say you get 1k for it. Walking onto a forecourt with cash will get you a v.good deal these days.

I saw 00 Corolla for 3500 yesterday (not a hatch, though), so I think that's where you should be looking. Infinately reliable, and cheap to run. And reasonably sized, too. Something like this

Or This would fit the bill. If you're not bothered about mileage, or go back to a 98, you could half that price - my sis-in-law bought one with 125k miles on it for 1750 and it's sailed through 2 x NCT's and cost zero in parts in the interim, bar some proper tyres and an oil change. Won't set the world on fire, but if budget is King, it's hard to beat, and a good choice.

A few Nissan's would fit the bill, too. Primera or Almera (for the smaller engines..) e.g. something like this

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

You're thinking the same as me in relation to the GTI being traded in so. I'm just thinking that they either (a) would flat out refuse to take it as a trade or (b) would offer something like €500 as a token gesture. It may not be worth the €1400 mentioned above (tis only a suggested asking price afterall), but I can't see it being worth as little as €500 either if you get me.

Corolla wouldn't be a bad option at all actually - thanks. Hadn't even considered it.

    no prob.

I'm only suggesting the likes of the Corolla if budget (and therefore ongoing maintenance/running costs) are paramount. Otherwise I'll admit they're bland.

If, down the road, you can/want to change up to something nicer, by all means....but the likes of the Corolla is infinately saleable.....and if nothing else, a damn fine back up car for when the 'cool' one lets you down.....damhik.........I've had to borrow the in-laws one a few times........

p.s. stick up the Golf on adverts.ie and a pic - we'd all like to gander at one around here anyway.... :)

Drive the golf until sept and don't bother with the belt and other small jobs unless they're safety related. it 'll sail on through 150k(without belt) and probably throught its next nct. If the belt goes sure its worth very little anyway.

Put it up for sale as is and if it doesn't sell ... so what,

Its common for people to think spending money will save them but you know your own car and it might look after you better than a 3k chance.

not spending money on the Golf won't make the car any bigger - which is what OP wants........

Galwaywtt; keeping the car thats a little bit small will save time money and grief... let the op comment on his situation . size was only one aspect, sounds to me the 600€ bills are more of an issue,

The link in his sig would lead me to believe roominess is definitely a major issue.

    Who is SO?
SO = Significant Other. Also known as the wife and the missus (both of which are phrases she hates) and I tend not to say "my wife" rather "the wife".

Car ain't going to make it to September with the mileage I cover, unless the belt and other few jobs are sorted. Only have it a year and have covered 25k miles, hence the thought of going diesel. Someone handy with a spanner could probably have the lot done for less that €400 in parts.

    Yup :)

€600 bills aren't really the issue, I'm just in the frame of mind of thinking that the €600 would be better spent being put towards a change of car. We could spend the €600 on the Golf, but its not going to increase its value or its practicality to us. ;)

Someone's very on the ball :D Yup, roominess is an issue alright. 2 dogs, 1 being the Rottweiler that travels in the boot. So if myself, the wife and the 2 dogs want to go anywhere ... well there ain't a whole lot of spare room to fit anything we need/want to take with us.

I'd say you will get about 700e tops for the Golf, its nearly 15 years old at this stage.

if that cars only worth 700 as the alds say and its a five door, tax and tested,, i'll give you 850! any pics?

This is what it looked like last summer (don't have any more recent pics at the moment). Only things that have changed since are that the original indicators are back on the front, and it could use a bit of a valet :o

    goppysun13.jpg

Might put it up on adverts at some stage and see if there's any interest out there. Can't really do that though till myself and herself have agreed on what might replace it.

Having checked Carzone, CBG and DoneDeal the cheapest I've come across is €2300 going up to near €5k. Makes me think that pricing it around the €1400-1500 mark and being open to offers is realistic enough (though I suppose time will tell :o)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,366 ✭✭✭ninty9er

€300...final offer...maybe more if you can make it not yellow:pac:

Take a look at the state of the interior on this though

I could slap a coat of satin black on it if it would suit sir? With trusty aerosol cans of course. :D

Holy crap at the interior of the Honda though - at least the Golf is predominantly black with just yellow detail.
