Insurance & Modifications

Just something I have been thinking about recently..

I have spent a fair bit on my car with modifications such as a nice sound system, headunit, OEM alloys, Stiffer shocks & springs, HID Xenons etc..

1)What if (touch wood) I was in an accident my fault/other drivers fault what happens to the items on the car that I have spent a fair whack on?

2)I presume I should inform my insurance company of these modifications to cover my a*s in the event they decided not to pay out due to any of these. But what I'm wondering is will my premium be hit hard?

The car in question isn't worth a whole lot but I'd hate to think that if someone smacks into me and its a write off, i'd loose everything i've put into it! Is this correct?

Don't get me wrong, my car is not " done up " or done up " boy racer style " but more subtle and OEM modifications to improve its handeling and appearance.

The suspension mods I would suspect would need to be declared as they change the handling of the car beyond what the original risk assessment would have factored in. Head unit and sound system will need to be declared if you want them covered as usually they only cover a set value - E400 or so.

I would doubt that the alloys and lights need to be declared; lighting can be a contributory factor in a crash though so some insurers might want to know.

Currently if someone crashes in to you and the car is written off it'll only be insured to its book value and not the cost of the mods. Generally anything declared will be covered. Your policy document should have some vague details on this at the very least I'd guess?

If your with Quinn, expect them to personally send Sean down to inflict pain on you for declaring anything; other insurers seem less concerned.

Ok so I think I should have a word with mr. quinn so just to cover my arse in the event of a crash.

Is there any point in me even doing this if i'm on 3rd party F&T? I was onto quinn and I nearly dropped dead when they gave me a price for modifications:o

They might void your insurance if you don't declare the suspension mods. So I'd tell them that at the least.
