DNA test all dogs in fight against dog poop. Germany.

A town in Germany plans to DNA test every dog so it can fine their owners when they poop public places.

Peter Kornell, the mayor of Volkach in Bavaria, said the scheme would involve taking either fur or saliva from each of the 420 registered hounds in town. 'Unfortunately, we have to do it voluntarily because there is nothing in the constitution about a dog DNA databank being enforceable,' he said.

'But we are proceeding to log every pooch.'

I honestly don't think this could possibly work in Ireland with the amount of unlicensed and stray muts about the country. :D

They are not the first ones to do so. Last year a town in Israel did the same:

I can't see why it's so hard for dog owners to clean up after their dogs. Why should other people have to walk in excrement because someone didn't bother to take responsibility? In Harold's Cross and Terenure it's close to lining the pavement!

And I remember Tallaght was under fire a while back for litter. Well I've lived in Tallaght too and I can safely say I'd rather step on a KitKat wrapper than a pile of dog-do.

Gee Run to the hills you don't have find obscure subjects! :p

While like all responsible dog owners I welcome moves to stop fouling by dogs but I think in the current recession, with restraints on public spending, we could spend our tax revenues in many more worthwhile and constructive ways than running DNA tests on dog poo.
