Computer powers off during Vista Installation

An aunt of my girlfriend brought over her laptop which was complaining that it wasn't booting into the OS - and gave an 'Operating System' not found.

So due to process of elimination, trying a repair installation and checking the BIOS.. I realised the hard drive was screwed as it wasn't detecting it anywhere.

So went up to PC World and picked up a 2.5 inch SATA drive which I installed.. it was recognised in the BIOS and when I went to reinstall Vista on it.

But tried to install Vista a number of times and it seems to power off at the 'Installing Features' - it doesn't shut down, power just cuts automatically at that stage.

Would it be possible that there's problems with the processor or mobo? Seems odd as it's fine up until that "Installing Features" step in Vista.

Any suggestions? Many thanks in advance.
