I have a rule in life... I will work at anything as long as its not French...!

Well lo and behold and swallow your pride for I answered the fone to a friend of mine in Derry who has a '97 306 Dturbo....! I am sorry I answered it now ...!

He was out driving and parked outside his house. He was 10mins in the house when his mum called to him and told him that there was smoke coming from underneath the bonnet. He ran out and lifted the bonnet. It stopped smoking fairly quickly when he disconnected the battery. There is a fuse/relay box in the LH side under the bonnet which is fed with the battery. A few of the wires out of this box were burned. He replaced these but now there is no life in the car at all... No mechanic will touch it and no body knows anything about it.

Owl idiot me has decided to have a look and see what I can come up with. If it was anybody else I would tell them to slide...!

Has anyone here ever worked on a 306 Diesel electrics before...? Has anyone ever seen a 306 do this or similar?

I have to find out what that box is feeding and which circuit done the damage and best of all why.... The engine is an XUD9 with Bosch pump

Damn Froggy garlic and onion engineering.. ?!:confused: HELP...!

Could be anything really. But the fuses need to be replaced anyway as the will have blown, thats possibly why it wont start( i dont know if that engine had an electronically controlled pump if it did then an ecu fuse is blown). If i had to guess i reckon the starter motor stuck on and burnt the system out(that could be second reason why it is not starting), but thats just a guess.

Good luck and tell us how you got on

ffs - a car goes on fire and you blame the French ??

If you're that paranoid about french cars, you better hang a sign outside saying no Ford's, Nissan's or new Mini's, either. Well, they do have PSA diesels.....

Forget the fact that French diesels are generally very good, or that the likes of Ford are still struggling with trying to keep tail light and indicator circuits mutually exclusive on anyting over 5 yrs old.........we've all see the 'christmas tree' at the back of a Ford with indicators on, braking, at night. If it's raining, you might even get the rear wiper chiming in.....

Oh, and Bosch is german, btw.....

We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Well gents.. Thanks for your replies ... John I didnt know that you were a French sympathiser ... For your information yes other manufacturers have used the Peugeot diesel engine but use their own looms....! The Peugeot enging is good its the rest of the car lets it down a bagful... ! Bosch make the pump - Indeed they are German... If only Bosch made the loom :D
The reason that the wiring looms were bad in the old Escort and Sierra was that the looms were made in the Essex factory in Derry.. Their quality control was suspect and I'll say no more....!

Back to topic.. Took a look at the pigdog on Monday morning and seen the damage. There is 8 white wires which are your permanent lives. These were all frazzled together. I disconnected these and tested them to ground. All of the permanent lives were shorted to ground. I went around a few white lives inside the car and they were all grounded. The loom runs from the left across behind the bumper and under the drivers side arch up through the scuttle and through inside the car on the right under the wiper motor.
I must tell you this car is lowered with 18" wheels. The loom is under the arch. Scrape Scrape Scrape... Another issue is that the grommets have become dislodged and the loom is damaged and touching the body in places. The outer insulation was grand.

First things first I had the 8 damaged main feeds disconnected. I cut the main feed to the ignition switch and ran a cable from the switch direct to the battery to see if any progress could be made. I switched the key on and the sidelights and indicators came on That means more damage.......

I had the intention of just running 8 new cables for the permanent lives and leave the damaged cables disconnected at both ends in the loom. Unfortunately there is more damage.. Some of the switched lives are also shorted to the permanent lives. The loom is too badly damaged to even consider repairing it.

We have sourced a 306 sedan 1.9turbo which is being broke. The wiring loom is in great shape. Apparently the loom separates inside the car at the back of the bulkhead on the right hand side. If this is true we will be in good shape.. If its not its a dash out and bumper off job to repalace the loom itself. The cars owner and another learned collegue are going to take out the loom of the 306 Sedan.. They know whats at stake...!

Sorry for the length of the post lads but after this debacle I am NEVER I repeat NEVER going to work at a Peugeot again !
