Major Problem with PC

My PC contracted a virus towards the end of last summer. I managed to keep it containted to within one administrator profile and by accident I clicked on that profile the other day and as it started to open I pulled the plug so as to stop it (The virus was quite nasty in that it wouldn't let you shut down/switch user/log off/use of task manager etc)

"Now on start-up I get a message saying - Sorry for the inconveniece, but Windoes did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose last known good configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If the recent statup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

    Safe Mode
    Safe Mode with Networking
    Safe Mode with Command Prompt

    Last Known good configuration

    Start Windows Normally"

When one of the options above is selected it attempts to restart and goes back to the same screen. What can I do??

I have a Dell Dimension 5000, using XP home edition. any help would be much appreciated..

eh sorry but if you had a virus and left it on your computer for the last 9 months or so and did nothing about it then there is little sympathy to be had.

You should have taken care of it there and then.

Probably the only thing you can do is do a repair install of windows if none of the other options work.
Might be better off doing a format though if you have no idea how to remove a virus.

Will I lose everything if I format? I have the OS software disk. Have tried inserting it and doing a boot from CD ROM

    Yes.

Which version of Windows are you running, if we know that we can give you instructions on how to attempt a repair install from the boot disc.

Start the system with the cd inserted and assuming your CD drive is set to boot before the hard disk then it will come up asking you to press a key to run setup.
    Do that.

It will get the point where it will ask you to repair or install windows, you actually do not want this repair so pick install (enter) and then when it asks you do you want to repair the current install you can pick that option, assuming there is enough of the windows system there for it to detect.

Oh if your cdrom does not boot then go into the bios. It will either be F1, F2, F10 or Del on start up. It could be something else but these are the usual ones.

You will not lose anything with a repair install. If you format then you will so if you do that, backup first. You will need a boot disk like knoppix or ERD to be able to load up, use a usb drive and back up.

If you do this, then run a virus scan BEFORE you copy the stuff back.
