Hey all. My girlfriend has a nine month old springer spaniel. He is kept out doors mostly. We have built him a nice big roomy pen and have a dog kennel in it for him to sleep in. that has being all grand until recent, he won't sleep in the kennel anymore. We cannot figure this one out. he just sleeps outside the door of it in the lashings of rain and the freezing cold. any thoughts or advice are welcome thanks

Have you checked inside the kennel? Maybe there's something in there that he doesn't like ... maybe a mouse got in or something?

My folks got a huge garden shed for our Newfoundland's sleeping quarters and it has two rooms in it. They used to keep the smaller room door open at night for him to sleep but he never went in. Then they had to put him in at night because of other dogs in the neighbourhood barking and annoying him so they started putting him into the bigger room of the shed and closing the door. After a few days he just would walk into his new bedroom with just saying "into bed now!"

I reckon that if he's not going in anymore, there's something in there that he doesn't like - dogs tend to be very protective and careful of their sleeping quarters.

Something could have frightened him when he was in the kennel, esp if had been happy to be in the kennel previously.
How long had he been sleeping inside the kennel?
Has there been any other change in his habits or mood?
Could he be lonely out there, bored perhaps? Has he company?
I would give him a bed inside & see how he gets on.. ;)
    good luck

We gave our dog a mat/towel he used to like to lie on when in the house and he got very comfy with it then moved it into his kennel and he got the idea
