Is there anyone that has done/is doing 3rd year Music Technology in Maynooth and can tell me what the modules are like, and how many modules are taken each semester.

I was also wondering about the Music Application Programming modules, are these normal programming languages that can be transferred to uses outside music (e.g. C++) or are they just for music/sound (e.g. C Sound).

Any info on the modules would be great.

    Cheers

Final project is compulsory and worth 10 credits
    You can focus on either:
    Electroacoustic Composition
    Recording Project
    Programming (Making an application)

    Modules that I took are
Software sound synthesis, which goes through the different methods of synthesis (FM, Granular, Subtractive etc) with a heavy focus on Csound. 5credits
    Recording (Pro Tools) 5 Credits
Electronic Music composition (focuses on listening to different electroacoustic works, making field recordings and creating electroacoustic compositions) 10 Credits

You can find a list of the modules here: http://www.nuim.ie/courses/uds/ba-mustech.shtml
    and their description here: http://international.nuim.ie/studyabroad/availablecourses/music

Not too sure about the programming modules, I generally tried to avoid them

So it's two modules per semester then. Yeah most people don't seem to like the programming so far, but I kind of enjoy it to be honest, I think I'll probably go for them if they are what I think they are.

    Cheers for that!

    So the taught Masters course.

Do you have to be interested in music?
I know that sounds a bit funny but I'd be interested in maybe the physics and the programming and the bit about music that I could learn along the way.

I'd imagine YES would be the answer.

An interest in music would probably be helpful, it being a computer music course!:D

Nah but I see what you're getting at, well for the BA there are modules focused completely on music theory, but they were taught from basics. In third year I think you can avoid that aspect of it completely and go down the route of recording or programming. I'm not really sure if the MA course is the same in this regard though.

For the MA, one third is your thesis/ composition/ programming, so that can be less musical if you choose. For the rest, the 'non-musical' types of modules e.g. synthesis, C programming are approached with a view to how they can be used for musical purposes. These are chosen modules. There are compulsory modules that are obviously more music than anything else. Definitely v.v. helpful if you've done physics/ engineering before but everything is music based.

    hope that makes sense!
