    Heya,

Im booking my NCT soon and need to know a few things like:

    Will a Lowered car pass

    Will medium tints pass

Here is a pick to show how low it is (tints arent on these pics)

PS bumper has been repaired since that pic :P

    1. the height doesn't matter - its the quality of the shocks and springs that are tested (balance etc.)
    2. It depends on how dark medium is and if the tester regards it as dangerous but looking at the pic I'd say that it will be fine.
    See the NCT manual here

    let us know too.
Ive been queing to consider to get tints on my thing.
We can tint the front side windows(front seat) right ?
its the uk that doesnt let you tint them ?

In the UK, the front side windows have to allow 70% light through, so a 30% tint max is allowed on those windows. The windscreen has to allow 75% of light through, so 25% tint max on that.

i thought it was 0% tint on the front everywhere.

Nope, not in the UK anyways.

There's a lot of BS going around here. To clarify:

*Window tint is rated as per light transparency not non-transparency. For example 20% tint is much darker than 40%*

I have 50% tint on my three rear windows (Lightest they had) and I would not put it on my drivers side windows. It'd look cheap and it also hinders vision especially in dull wet weather.

Anything that makes driving more dangerous is a bad thing.

Are you saying what i said is BS? My definition of tint may not be up to Oxford standard, but the points about the percentage of light travelling through the windows are 100% correct.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,699 ✭✭✭samhail

    i think its just terminology.

NCT might refer to it as light being blocked (80%) and tinters refer it to being light thats let in (20%)
thats what the retailers to anyway - http://www.visionfx.ie/index.php?loc=1-1&id=2054099828

why not overreact a bit aswell in your posts.

I'm sure those particular figures are bang on. Would you like some chap going out buying 5% tint for his side windows only to find that he can't see a thing because of your advice here?

I'm sorry if you took that as a personal insult.

Lol, you quoted me and then said that there was a lot of BS flying about, how is that directed at anyone else?
I see your point about the difference in terminology and I guess peoples view of the % tint (ie mine) tends to differ from the retailers.
But the % light figures are true and are what the UK Police have their light meters set to. :)

Again I apologise if you took that up wrong.

Most cars come from the factory with a low level of tint 90-95%. I know this because I replaced a window in my old car with the wrong shade (very subtle greeny kinda tint) and thats what my supplier told me. Take from that what you will.

So in summary you'd want a very low level of aftermarket tint on your front side windows to pass a 70% 'transparency test' if they were to test your car. I've never seen aftermarket tint lighter than 50%

Indeed, i'm guessing thats why the police have it set to such a high level, they effectively don't want people tinting their front windows beyond a safe level and rightly so.

Personally, i'm not a fan of tint at all, on certain cars it looks right, on others it looks awful. There's a lot of 5 series going around with blacked out rear side windows and nothing done to to the rest of the windows, it looks absolutely awful imo, completely ruins the design balance of the car.

I was in the barbers last week and when I walked in he shouted at me "you've absolutely RUINED that car of yours!". I was shocked, "why, what have I done?". "You tinted those windows, it looks desperate!". I just smiled and explained there's another car going around just like mine but he tinted the windows on it, glad someone else agreed with me that the other one looks desperate. :)

ive a black lexus is200 so i think the tint would look nice on it, though there is the standard manufacturer tint on it.
Ive NCT coming up soon so think will wait til after. iw ouldnt do anything that isnt safe.

back to the OPs q though :)
one of the guys was bringing a car for the NCT (or what ever the equilivant is up the north) and it was going to fail for the tinted windows so my mate just ripped off the tint from the windows - doesnt sound like a very good tinting job but still, does get pulled it seems.

I've read on American forums that if they stop you and you fail the light meter test, they'll either give you a ticket, or give you the option to rip it all off on the spot.
