Apologies, for appearing to be a bit of a heathen here. I am going to first ever opera in the NCH next month, and would appreciate if any could tell me what is appropriate for men to wear. Tux/Suit/Jacket? Your help would be much appreciated.

Tux is overkill tbh, unless you're actually in the opera and it's part of the costume. Try either a suit or smart casual.

In other words, don't be me.

This is what my dad wears to every trip to the concert hall, no matter the content and he looks just like all the other men there (apart from my other half who rather stands out in his leather coat and New Rocks)

Nice trousers (not jeans, those chino things would be okay)
    Clean shirt
Suit type jacket that you can take off if you like or if you get too hot.
    Tie is optional
    Nice shoes.

I've gone to the NCH in jeans and a t-shirt. It's not really important tbh, but if you're concerned, then I think the main thing would be to dress well, but not necessarily dress up. btw, what are you going to hear?

Whatever you would wear on an average day off work, going to the pub, shopping, taking the kids to swimming, going out for dinner etc.

i.e. going to the NCH should have no bearing on what you choose to wear. There are still elitists out there who like to dress up and wear their culture on their sleeve (;)) to distiguish themselves from the great unwashed, but fortunatley they are a dying breed. Tux would stickout like a sore thumb at the NCH. Wexford festival, the 'dress circle' of the Gaiety, are the only sad spots where the anacronism lingers.

Wear whatever you feel relaxed in, jeans and t-shirt is fine if you wish, or dress a bit more smartly if you prefer. Tux, or even suit and tie, is total overkill IMHO. In a tux you'd look like a complete prat. :p
