I have been thinking of taking up my grandad's fiddle. However I am worried about the effect of my fingers on strings and the damage that my happen. I have soft hands you see. Diabetics have to look after their feet and fingertips. Does it mangle your hands? I also stab the sides of my fingers at leas 4 times per day to test blood.

In addition can anyone offer generic advice about starting / learning?
I would like to learn trad music but I think I prefer classical music. There is a scoiriocht near me. However I cannot read music and me+piano = you+suicide :o
