    Don't want to sound flippant, but....that's what a means test is all about.....

    It seems like you have applied for Jobseeker's Assistance, and as don't have enough contributions for a benefit payment, your means have to be assessed. So the inspector has to check any income, savings, stocks, shares etc you may have, as you don't have an automatic right to this payment.

    And if you have applied for an unemployment payment, well then, one of the conditions is that you must be actively seeking and available for full time work. Expect to be asked this question from time to time! In fact you will be signing a monthly declaration to say that you are looking for full time work.

    If you qualify for full time benefit, you will get €204.30 for yourself, and if your partner isn't working or has any income, €135.60. You will get €26 for each child.

    If you thought it was a load of boll..ks, why did you not ask the welfare person to leave your house, refuse to do the means test & withdraw your claim to JA?

    If you arent working and you dont sign on the dole,what happens when your are re-employed and questions arise to what you were doing or where were you in the meantime

    If you arent working and you dont sign on the dole,what happens when your are re-employed and questions arise to what you were doing or where were you in the meantime

    Living at home, reading endless books, going for long walks, going on protest marches..or banged up in an institution.

    You are not required to claim JA but be glad we live in a country that does provide a safety net when you are unemployed. The means test is there for a reason, it needs to be stringent to (attempt to)prevent abuse and the same rules apply to all

    You don't have to explain anything to the taxman unless you were economically active and not declaring it.

    Good luck with your JA claim.

    thanks for that,i just thought that with work slack at the minute it was better to ''sign on'' that way i was on the radar screen so to speak. otherwise i wouldnt have bothered with this load of.......

    I thought when you applied there was just a follow up interview in the actual dole office.
    As you are married, I'm surprised there has been an in person visit from a welfare officer.
    Why has this happened?. Is it to do with a Rent allowance claim?.

    I think with Social Welfare you are likely to have a more severe means test than if you were a PAYE worker.

    Having read through these pages, it's very obvious why the Black Economy is so attractive and is thriving once again.

    * There's no bookwork
    * Don't need to issue receipts
    * No bothersome VAT calculations
    * No Revenue downside
    * No advertising costs (value for money jobs done direct ensures
    word-of-mouth advertising)
    * Engage assistants on a 'need you today' basis with instant layoff
    and no repercussions with hand selected staff
    * Continue seamlessly with dole claim so no awkward gaps in continuous time period.
    Tried and tested business model so why would anyone want to change ?

    no ,nothing to do with rent allowance. jobseekers allowance is means tested and seemly requires home visit-thats what im told anyway..........first time signing on so i have no prior experience with this

    all my bookwork is up to date,all vat returns up to date,income -tax up to date,word of mouth and references from previous work was my advertising.....continue seamlessly with dole claim so no awkward gaps in continous time period -what exactly does that mean? tried and tested business model? black econonmy?

    Because when a recession arrives and the work drives up, you have no stamps paid which entitle you to any benefit!

    Duh.

    Were you given a choice to pay A or S class PRSI when you became self employed ?

    On the revenue website it says the self employed pay class S PRSI and employees pay class A - it does not say that anyone has a choice in the matter. http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/leaflets/it1.html#section19

    Closing thread, this thread is nearly a year old. Another thread is currently open re: Self employment and PRSI S class stamps.
