What is your favourite produced album/producer?

My vote has to go to Steven Wilson of Porcupine tree.
As for the album: In absentia

too hard to name my absolute fave producer but one that sticks out would be Andy Weatherall for "Primal Scream - Screamadelica"

Why do you say that's the best produced 6 ?

My guess is probably Tony Visconti and his early work with David Bowie and T Rex
or maybe it's Nigel and Radiohead

Not only that album, but all of porcupine tree.
Steve Wilson is just incredibly creative and innovative as a producer and guitarist.

Solid Air. Has to be. Honest, raw, and gets the best sound out of the instruments.

    Awesome.

For many years the best sounding album I had was Bellybutton by Jellyfish.

Jack Joseph Puig mixed it I don't remember who produced it.

Slave to the Rhythm /Grace Jones
    Produced by Trevor Horn

Not really an album but different versions of the same song. Sounds amazing today.

    So Peter Gabriel

Sledgehammer, Red Rain, Don't give up etc

Hysteria/ Def Leopard. Back in Black/ACDC
    Produced by Mutt Lange

Without a doubt best Rock albums of their era.

We were mixing the original multis of Sledgehammer today actually - Gabriel now owns SSL and that's one of the tracks they use as a demo!

Amazing .My old colleague Kevin Killen was involved in engineering that one.
My guess is that most of these albums were mixed on an SSL.

been listening to this since heard the sad news on thursday, what an amazing sounding album, a real roomy sound but with lots of definition and overall really warm sounding.

think that could be a whole other thread, great sounding albums inspite of the producer:)

ah, interesting choice. His records for the most part, sound very good, although I think the sound textures are too smooth, everything fits in too snug if you know what I mean. Also I didn't like the way the drums were recorded for Opeths Damnation, the hi hats sound very tin foily. Still he is good at what he does.

Have you ever heard the Bellybutton and Spilt Milk Demo's? They're ridiculous. I actually prefer Spilt Milk to Bellybutton, but I prefer the Spilt Milk demo's more than anything. It was a real labour of love. Tons of engineers coming and going. Hundreds of instruments. Unreal.

    And my nominations are....
    David Bottrill
    Nick Launay
    Brendan O Brien
    Quincy Jones
    The Motown Geezers

    That sounds very cool.

I'd nominate Butch Vig for his work on Garbage's "Version 2.0". An excellent mix of live drums and samples alongside guitars, synth, and vocals. Some tracks are heavily guitar-driven, some are piano-driven, and some are driven by the rhythm section, yet all of them work together very well on the album. Obviously, he's better known for his work on "Nevermind" and "Siamese Dream", but I reckon his work with Garbage better demonstrates his all-round skills.

    Interesting!

I thought that sounded shyte compared to the first one .... to me it sounded to laboured and 'artificial' .... also mixed in the Box, a first for Butch as I recall.

    Horses for Courses though.
