Crown but no Root Canal

Looking for some advice please. Basically, I got a huge filling done in November (€130) dentist said to see how long in lasts but may need root canal and a crown, tooth split last Sunday and dentist repaired it yesterday free of charge of course (although he did 2 other fillings while I was there €220).

Anyway he says I don't root canal but I should have the crown done and it costs €850 (20% of which can be claimed back). Now I had braces for 2 years when I was 19 and I really love my teeth but I simply can't afford €850. I like my dentist but I was shocked at how quickly he said €850 while he was working away in my mouth I couldn't respond. I've spent over €500 in the past year on dental care and just wonder where will it all end? It seems that everytime I have something done, something else needs to be done!

So what I'm wondering is, am I being ripped off? Should I get a second opinion? And while I believe that if you live and earn your living in the Republic then you should support businesses in the republic but I am very tempted to consider going up North? Any advice would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance.
