You have to be 21 but i guess you know that and as far as im aware you need to do/get a CPC too (Certificate of Profesional Cometency).

The 6 month rule only applies to Motorcyles, Cars and Work Vehicles - i.e. Cat A1, A, M, B, EB and W so does not apply for Cat C or D learner permits.

I did my D1 test in the summer:

Very similar to B test, regular driving, passenger stops (pulling in at kerbside/bus stops), left reverse, right reverse, hill start, under the bonnet stuff, some interior questions and road signs etc before you set off.

Bear in mind OP that you can go straight from a category B to a category D (large bus). If you pass category D you will automatically get D1.

I did it in 4 lessons IIRC (but I already had the rigid and artic truck licences). You have to remember that those who already have a basic B licence, should know a lot already. The rules of the road etc. are very much the same for all vehicles and the only real requirement is to become accustomed to the dynaminics of a larger vehicle.

The pass rates for buses and trucks is much higher than for category B even though 99% of the candidates do not have their own vehicle and only gain experience for the test while on lessons.
