Whoever played Bass on Mate, Fee, Kill, Repeat by Slipknot was pretty good ( I think it was Paul Grayl, but I'm open to correction. ) . You need to listen to at least 2 thirds of the song before you make up your mind.

Phil... this is my fave song of all time and altho he my not have been as technically talented as some of the people so far on this thread, he had a sound of his own, stlye of his own and not to mention soul... when I think of this song and hear it in my head, all I can hear is the base line towards the end of the guitar solo. Great stuff.:)

I'll always have a soft spot for Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse. I love his (albeit short) solos in some songs, such as Hammer Smashed Face and Crushing the Despised.

I do get the feeling that burton would be my fav out of those three. Ever since hearing "anaethesia pulling teeth" and the intro for "For whom the bell tolls.


Other than that, I would say Jason Newsted. A lot of his bass work on the load/reload albums and the black album is seriously underrated.

Oh yes - and one secret to his sound is in his custom flatwound strings. Not many players use flatwounds in rock these days - John Deacon (Queen) was another. A great Maiden track to try is Los'fer Words (Big 'Orra):
