Carbon or Aluminium

With this bike scheme thing about now I've been looking online for a bike around the £1000 mark. I haven't given up on the idea of buying in an LBS, but 105 is so much more tempting than Tiagra

I'm looking at the Cube attempt 2009, the Focus Cayo and the Focus Variado expert.

My question is which frame should I go for? Bearing in mind that I'm pretty heavy 105+kg I'm not sure if carbon is recommended for my particular weight class.

Any opinion (and/or mocking) much appreciated

Don't worry about the strength of carbon, it's plenty strong enough. Look at strong wheels instead.

Remember it's €1000 not £1000 when you shoppping online in the UK. Anything above €1000 will be deducted from your net pay.

I was about 105kg when I bought my carbon bike and ts fine. In saying that I was discussing with some one the other day saying allu might be better all round. I don't think anyone would really notice any difference unless they are racing day to day. If you crash a carbon bike you have more likelihood of damaging it properly.

Hahahahahahahaha look at the big head on ya (or something :) )

Go with the Cayo -it's not quite as good value as it was last year now it's 105 equipped, but it's still a good bike. Or look at Planet X, they have cracking deals from time to time!

    Listen to the man:

    Very nice cayo review

I would go for carbon. Carbon is plenty strong and there would be no problem with your weight. Cayo or Planet X. Get 105 as a minimum, spend a bit over the €1,000 if necessary to get the bike you want assuming you just pay tax normally on the bit over 1k.

Thanks for the advice lads, so now it's just down to which bike suits my mankini best.

To Hungrycol and Blorg, yeah I realise it's €1000 not £1000, but I figure I may as well go for something up in that range.

Buy Blorg's Cayo, it's sitting there doing nothing, and I'm sure he'll let you have it for a grand :p

As an ex-rugby player who'd be as beefy as yourself I have to say I have no concerns about carbon.

Not valid on the bike scheme unfortunately! Higher spec than the 2009 though all right :D

Well that's good enough for me.

Now I just have to decide on a frame size, whether I get a Compact double or triple and then try to sell my RCR 500.

This is more effort than it should be
