Intend to buy cross country spikes today in Dublin city centre. Am thinking Arnotts will stock them, but to save me a wasted trip can anyone confirm whether they do?

Anywhere else in city centre that may stock them? Preferably with a sales assistant who will know what they are talking about, as I'm clueless on the subject of spikes.

Runways does spikes, but I'm not sure if they do XC ones.

Actually, I bought a pair in Runways 2 weeks ago. I think they are more of a general purpose pair, rather than specifically XC. It was around 40 euros for the pair, plus 5 for a set of 12mm spikes.

Arnotts and Runways as above also Elverys on is it Suffolk Street? But the main problem may be size - they often don't have the ones you want in the most common sizes.

Just make sure you get a long-distance track or XC spike rather than a sprint spike (no heel).

+ 1 long-distance are a must . Runways had them 2 week ago when I was in there.

Slightly off topic is there a long-distance spike that has loads and loads of support almost like a runner?

Runways do them have NB XC and the Saucony Kilkenny both very good. Failing there Mick Dowling in Terrenure will def have some

Was in Elverys earlier and the only spikes they had were ones with no spikes in the heel - is this what you mean by sprint spike? Are the ones I'm looking for ones with spikes throughout, like football boots or golf shoes?

Hi Peckham, With a sprint spike there is on heal at all. The heal bit just wraps around the sprinters heal as they are on the toes. A track middle/long distance spike has spike nibs only in the front of the shoe and more cushioning in the heal - not a lot but some. A XC spike has spike nibs in the front and heal of the shoe, but you can use the middle/long distance spikes for XC.

Bought some spikes yesterday in Runaways. The shoes came with a little packet of spikes, which I think are 5mm length, however the guy in the shop spoke about using different lengths of spikes in the shoes.

I guess it's trial and error, and depending on the conditions....but what sort of combinations are people here using?

    5mm track only.

12 mmmost of the XC races i've done.

In the past when i used to race had some 15mm too that I used to used depending on the courses.

But a safe bet is the 12mm for around this time of the year. Also used to have some 7mm that I used to wear when racing on grass tracks , of if it was a really really dry XC course.

Think they would do the job for you. From the description I'm guessing that they are "officially" a distance track spike rather than an XC one. But that is the type of shoe that I have been using and is more than suitable, but I picked up some longer actual spikes that I've been using for the BHAA races. Think it was some 6mm ones that came with my Asics but got some 9mm ones which have been doing the job for any races so far.

Loads of threads on spikes so I didn't want to start another. Would love to give cross country a go so from this thread I'm assuming runways or Arnotts are the way to go to buy? Had been looking to buy online but it's hard to find info on what you should be buying. Do they do different models for women like they do with road runners?

I was in arnotts last week and their running shoe section has shrunk - did'nt notice any spikes at all so I'd try runways or elverys. I've never notice womens spikes on sale in Irish shops, they do exist but I think the only thing that differs is the colour (girly pink:rolleyes:).
You want to make sure you buy a pair of xcountry or middle/long distance spikes, not sprint spikes, and get 9mm min size nibs.

I can't imagine they stay pink for long though. :pac:

I cannot imagine there being much other than colour in the difference for womens spikes. The difference with the shoes normally is to do with the way the support is positioned I think, spikes have next to no support in them anyway so that wouldn't then matter.

For the noobs buying spikes for the first time - remember to treat them as you would buying any new pair of shoes, meaning the first time you wear them should not be in a race. Get them out on the grass a few times for 2 miles or so to set how they feel, they are typically a narrow fit and have less technology applied than road shoes, so be prepared in advance.

Where do you pick up your shoes Beepbeep? Anywhere in Bray or surrounding areas?

Shoes - anywhere and everywhere, I'm lucky not to have any serious bio-mechanical issues, so I can pick up anything with a bit a cushioning in it.
Spikes, to be serious I haven't really purchased in years (with the exception of an impluse buy of a pair of Nike Lanang ST for £15 in the Outlet), the last time I made a concious decision to buy spikes I bought them in Mick Dowling's, but that was long before your Runways, Irish Fit and etailers.
I know most of the club support Amphibian King and the feedback is always positive.
