it really depends on alot. Like how much you will drink in bars, will you rent cars, will you go on many road trips, will you stay in many hotels or hostels, how much will your rent be, have you a stop of in NY or somewhere. I did alot of all of the above. I brought €4500 with me at an exchange rate of $1.50 for every €1 which you cant get now (you should probably take into account that i spent $900 shopping in NY). I also earned about $800 from a few weeks work there too

You should be able to do it cheaper than that but thats just to give you an idea.

I'm only gonna have about $3000 with me, $1500 of which will be used on accommodation.

it all depends on what you want to do when there.

im in america at the moment and have spend 2000 dollars in a week, but thats just shopping.

i dont plan on doing much shopping during a j1 and think ill bring bout 3000 dollars and hope to get a job early. maybe have the last 2 weeks off then.

Why does everyone bring so much? I brought $700 with me last year and earned $4,500 and had a fantastic time.

San Francisco...would like more than $3000 but its not possible without taking out a loan...so it will have to do!

I worked on average 5 days a week, 1-9, 11 dollars per hour with a bonus of 1 dollar for every hour worked if I stayed till the end of the summer. Employer organised accomodation and food which worked out at 12dollars a day.

Seriously though, I was living in a remote cabin in the depths of the Alaska interior so I suppose you would obviously need more money in San Diego but bringing $5000?!

i moved to america with $500 before in 2004, i was 19 and on my own
managed just fine but had job and accomadation sorted before i left
    was living in new jersey

then i moved back again 2004.2005 with around $700 to NYC and was grand too, altho had a house and job lined up too

u can treat it as a lavish holiday if ur loaded / southsider or do it like most internationals do and go there to work.

I'm going to san diego, and i'm bringing at least $3000 with me. I have a decent job sorted already though, so I should be alright with that.

I forget how much I brought over with me when I went on my J1.

Remember ringing my mummy a few times to put money into my account..Granted that was towards the end of the summer when I went on my shopping spree's! And yes before anyone asks, I did work all summer!! Good times! :D
