A 4850 would be around the same price maybe cheaper but I imagine would be a better card (maybe not by much though).

Both are multipage articles full of tech talk and benchmarks. but these two pages are good for a compare.

The HD4850 seems like a much better performer given the results.

Was it new or 2nd hand? If its new that's not too bad but 2nd hand that's too steep. The 99 euro 4830 would trade blows with it pretty well - I'll never understand peoples strange fascinations with the powerhouses of prior generations....

I have both the 8800gtx and 512mb 4850, 8800gtx is hands down the better card.It plays everything you throw at it ( even now ) with no problems at all.Its such a solid card, the 4850 on the other hand wasnt that impressive imo, it was a real step down from the 4870 I had before it.

Yes the GTX would be faster at high resolutions in some cases, but there's a few factors to consider. 4850 consumes less power, requires only 1 6-pin, is a single slot card, and has a better feature set. Not to mention, you can get the 4830/4850 for 99/115-120, while people still pay 150-160 for 2nd hand GTX's (thus no warranty), not just for SLI but even as primary cards. So you're paying more for a card that's not much faster, but bigger, hotter, more demanding and without a warranty....

I'd choose a 4850 hands down to be honest....Not that the 8800GTX is a bad card but choosing it as a primary gaming card, unless you get it for an exceptional price, is silly these days for the above reasons. And of course the 4850 is a step down from the 4870, wouldn't that be obvious??

It wasnt just higher res, it was every res, on loads of different games from WoW to Warhead.At 1680 x 1050 the 8800gtx plays everything smoothly including heavy games like GTA 4 and Crysis Warhead.HD4850 is a good card, but its not a true gaming card.

I know I shouldn't have expected the 4850 to compete head on with the 4870, but I did expect it to be closer, like say 8800gt to 8800gtx, it was infact more 9600gt to 8800 Ultra.I had my 4850 clocked very high and it was well behind the 4870.They are priced similar enough, 4870 - €180, 4850 - €130.
