hi, for a complete novice when it comes to cars, what would people think is better in terms of reliability and "life-span" of either VW 07 FSI passat or an 07 Hyundai Sonata CRDI?
I've narrowed a search down to two cars and would appreciate objective informed opinion, as i havent much of a clue when it comes to cars.

    thanks in advance for advice.

yeah, i know, but i like these two.
VW is 1.6 and Hyundai is 2.0, both have about 25000km on them.

which car is better? price approx 18k

Both cars have their own issues, but I'd have more confidence in the Sonata, it will also be more economical.

On the other hand the Passat has a nicer interior and generally feels more solid.

Also bear in mind that you can get a new Passat TFSI for €22,450, doesn't make the 1.6 look great value. You could get a lot better for €18k.

thanks for feedback, will try haggle down further, i'm kinda leaning towards the sonata anyway.

    Have you driven either car?

yes, i liked both of them, didnt really have a preference on performance, the hyundai looks a bit nicer, in good condition too, dont know much about hyundais but knew vw have good reputation, just wanted to check if hyundai had too.

what would reasonable price be for sonata do you think?

Well the VW 1.6 lacks in power but as colm said the VW will feel more solid. The Hyundai is OK to drive, light steering, the VW has a a heavy (ish) steer but I think you feel in more control of the car. The Hyundai CRDI (diesel) would be a lot more economical and powerful. If they are listed on a carzone or something, copy the links so we can have a look. Aslo compare the specs etc

VW had a good reputation for reliability, but that's a good few years in the past now. If reliability's important to you then you'd be better off with a Hyundai. The Passat is a nicer place to sit, though.

    Ah, they're automatic.

I wouldn't buy either TBH. but I'd have the Hyundai if it was a straight choice.

The Passat is far too dear for this climate. If reliability is your main priority it would have to be the Sonata.

on another thread a honda accord was recommended to someone, is this a superior car?
what kind of value does this represent?

not wishing to get in trouble, but I am currently seeling a 2007 FSI Comfortline and it is substantially less than the passat you are looking at OP. Feel free to PM if you want details! ;)

Can't go wrong with a Honda.

May be a tad more expensive but will last forever. Holds its value well too.

Have you considered a Nissan Maxima? They do everything the Sonata does, but they are a bit less mainstream and there are some serious bargains to be had. Plenty of autos out there too.

As for the Passat, unless you're a fiercely patriotic European with a pathological hatred of anything from Korea, there is no reason to even consider it.
