Astra 2 signal hard to get

    Hi,

I have a FTA set up, and can get Astra 1 and Hotbird no problem.
Astra 2 shows a signal on my meter but no PQ bar.
There is a hill about a quarter of a mile to the east of me covered in forest, I presume this is my problem.

My question is this..if I can get Astra 1 and Astra 2 is just slightly below this, it is reasonable to assume with the right equipment I should be able to receive it.
I have a Lacuna MKIV DSM Meter and I have got an Astra 2 signal about 400 m south of my house.
There is very little difference in the graph on the meter from the two locations.

My equipment was bought from Satellite.ie.

    Any help appreciated.

    Joe

You should be able to to, I doubt the forest is your problem. If you can see the sun around 10am and its not obstructed you shoud be ok.

Yes, if the forest is in the way, the equipment you'll need is a 30 metre mast or a chain saw.

As Tony says, if you can see the sun (when it's not obscured by clouds;)) at around 10.00 or 11.00, then you will pick up Astra 2 no problem. It's in the South-East, so a hill a quarter of a mile away to the East should be no problem - unless it's a friggin' mountain! If you get a protractor and measure 22 degrees from the horizontal and sight along this from where your dish is located and can see clear sky to the South-East, then you're ok!

The Sun never showed up this morning, probably hung over.

Thanks for the imput, I like the idea of the protractor thingy.
There are quite a few trees on the property, I have cut down about 6 do far and trimmed as many again.
I am sure the dish is above them but the protractor will let me know.

I had Sky out here ages ago but the guy said there was no signal.
He didn't show much initiative and didn't seem to know where East was, so I was glad when he drove off.

    Again, thanks to all.
