Insuring UK reg car in UK to drive in Ireland??

    Hi,

I recently bought a car from the UK and the VRT has gone up since I bought it, they are quoting a ridiculous OMSP, so I have decided to see if I can insure the car through the UK.

Basically, I have an Irish full license for many years, I also have a UK address that I can use, so I am wondering can I insure the car with a UK insurance company, with that address as my home address, and with an Irish license?

I know that Quinn will insure a UK reg car but if I am stopped at a customs checkpoint and it's registered to me at a UK address and insured through Quinn in Ireland I'd imagine they'll become very suspicious.

I'd prefer to insure through the UK if possible, so basically am wondering if this is possible with an Irish license??

Sorry if this has been brought up already, I searched for threads and couldn't find anything.

    Thanks.

you would need to have bills, bank account, income/welfare in the uk to try to attempt to say that you are living there. If you had all that, well I guess you would be living there. The irish licence would be fine as there are many uk residents who have irish (eu) licence.
Also if you have an income here, bills etc, they will cop it so its not as easy as it was.
Best to pay the vrt and argue about the omsp. Most appeals are successful.

Like or not VRT is legal, trying to circumvent it isn't
