I have a friend who just bought a Compaq laptop with a blue ray drive. He has Power DVD Deluxe installed but can't play a blue ray DVD he rented from a movie store.

Does he need to install codecs or could it be that Power DVD Deluxe needs an update or patch?

Ask him to check if he has the full version of Power DVD.
Some pc's come with a basic edition and you are then given an option to upgrade for a fee!
Very slight chance it right be a region code problem or drive problem. Probably not, but best to be aware of all possible areas where things arise.

    Hi Biggins,

It's definitely the full bought version of Power DVD (he purchased seperately).

I've just checked with him & he told me that the Blue Ray movie he rented stated that it was region '0' which means "worldwide". Region 0 is not an official setting; discs that bear the region 0 symbol either have no flag set or have region 1–6 flags set.

I know nothing about Blu Ray but I think a region 0 Disc should play for him?

Generally the PowerDVD application needs to be registered and upgraded. As far as I know if you have an OEM version, you can get the upgrade to play Blu ray disks for free, this was certainly the case when I purchased an LG blu ray drive recently.

also try the compaq web site for updates.

Also make sure that your monitor will support HD playback. In the case of the laptop it shouldn't be an issue however if you connect to an external monitor may be a problem.

I don't think it does. It definitely doesn't play HD-DVDs.

The only software ive ever found to play blu-ray's is powerdvd as well.. bit of a rip off tbh if you have to upgrade. You have people in stores telling you "your getting blu-ray with this laptop for a great bargain blah high definition blah" but they dont tell you, you might have to pay more..

Can power dvd recognise the blu-ray at all?

Look, if this is true, thats bullsh!t. For the cost of the Player and the cost of the Disc, it is Bullsh!t to have the cost of being able to Play the Disc thrown on top of that. Someone needs to correct me on this before I get upset and fire of an Executive Email Carpet Bomb to Sony.

This only really affects pc users.. I remember when I got my drive it had no software.. It was OEM, I dunno if you get the retail does it give you the software.. Id say its a good idea giving sony an email!

Pretty crap isn't it, you can buy blu ray media, a pc/laptop with a blu ray drive in it but this does not guarantee you can play the movies.

Bit like buying a pc only the discover it won't run any software?

And guess what, just because your Blu ray player plays the movies now on your expensive TV or monitor that supports their encryption standard, the studios can decide at some future date that they no longer want the disks they publish playing on the model of player or drive you have. They do this by disabling the content for specific devices.

Yeah and it's all legal to prevent you playing their disks on your legitimate drive, just because they have deeper pockets and employ a lot of people in suits.
