EC proposes EUR 1 billion for broadband development Wednesday 28 January 2009 | 01:00 PM CET

The European Commission has proposed spending EUR 1 billion on increasing access to broadband in rural areas of the EU. The money is part of a larger package worth EUR 5 billion for energy and infrastructure investments to stimulate the economy. The broadband funding would come from the EU's Rural Development Fund and target the 30 percent of the population in rural areas who do not have broadband access. The European Economic Recovery Plan set out a goal of developing broadband networks to achieve a full 100 percent high-speed internet coverage by 2010. The commission called for a quick approval of the proposals by the European Council and Parliament, so spending can start this year.

To put this in perspective , we have about 1% of the EUs population and would get €10m at most !

Ryan will easily piss that €10m away on consultants who will look into matters of import like Green Broadband and Eco Friendly Fibre ....thereby leaving us with what we have ....which is nothing outside the big cities :(
