VW Golf GT 1.4 122bhp

    Hi all,

Does anyone drive one of these?

Hoping to buy a new Golf this weekend to take advantage of the relatively low prices on new cars and I've narrowed it down to either the:

1.4 Comfort Line Mark VI (Tax C)
    1.4 GT 80bhp Mark V (Tax D)
    1.4 GT tsi 122bhp Mark V (Tax C)

Anyone have any experience with these cars? And is it true that they don't make them anymore in preparation for a Mark VI GT?

Also, my insurance company told me today that it's cheaper to insure the 122bhp tsi than the 80bhp, any ideas why that would be?

And one other thing, what sort of savings are people getting out there? I'm going for 10-15% off the list price...

    Thanks all

The 1.4 GT TSi 122 is the car to go for. Cracking car.

Dunno why it would be cheaper to insure tho....

And if your buying new, you wont get anywhere near 10-15% discount. Might be lucky to get 5-7% off a new car.

Drumming the wrong notes there boy.:pac:

10% off should be your minimum goal.

Sorry Kev, but AFAIK there isnt even a 10% margin on a new golf. A dealer isnt going to sell a car at a loss. Not a new one anyhow.

In the height of the dealers time for printing money my oul lad bought an A4 with a list price of €41k for €37,000 in a straight deal. That was when dealers were buying themselves helicopters and building glass palaces.

Maybe Audichris could comment. Don't know if he works in a combined VAG dealership but I genuinely think the OP should aim for at least 10% off.

Then again he could just buy nearly new and save himself 14% + straightaway.

    Thanks lads.

Yeah I reckon I'll start at 10% and gauge it from there.

And I'm going to ring that guy in AXA again to confirm that he was quoting me on the right car, seems strange that my premium would drop even though I'm jumping up by 42 brake...

1.4 TSi gets the thumbs up though yeah?

Thats a different car, in a different era unfortunately.

There was a thread here not too long ago about a guy wanting to buy a new Scirocco. I think he was being offered 8% and that was afer a few test drives and a lot of haggling.

But yeah, maybe a nearly new model is the way to go. Not as big a hit on the depreciation then!

Yeah but the Scirocco is a low volume model compared to the Golf. They would likely only have a few (only the one maybe) in stock and I'd imagine that they would be willing to hold on for the right price.

That's speculation but I'd imagine thats why the discount was so low.

Also to answer your original question OP; NiSmo, a poster here, has some kind of a TSi Golf.

Yeah I'll definitely be looking at second hand models alright but my preference would be for a new model.

Also I just saw on the VW site that they've dropped the price of the Mark V Golfs by over €2,000

You should look upwards towards the 1.4 170bhp tsi or at least the 140. Don't go near the 80bhp one. I have the 170 and its a fantastic car. Great engine with a great sound. The 122 though isn't twincharged afaik so won't be as impressive but still nice and fast.

I believe the TSI the OP mentioned is last years (Mark V) model? Surely he could get a good discount from the dealer as he can't keep old model car indefinitely?

Aren't VW doing close to 3k off Mark V Golfs at the moment to get rid of the last of the stock? OP if you could at all stretch to a Mark VI with the TSi engine you would be getting a fine car, plus a model that will still be current say in 3 years time if you were to trade in again.

Spec on the MKVI Golfs isn't as high as the equivalent spec on the MKV. Comfortline no longer gets Alloy wheels, but the Hub Caps are very decieving - unless you flick them you'd swear they were Alloys.

Highline replaced the GT model. Gets sport seats but only gets 16" Alloys - advertised from launch with 17" Porto wheels which has caused a good few complaints already.

1.4Tsi is a cracking little engine. I've driven the 122bhp version in a couple of A3's and there is a good bit of punch from it. In 140bhp spec with a DSG box it's a hoot - even in a Touran.

Not a hope of getting 10% discount off a MKVI. Dealer margin isn't that large on any VW/Audi's.

I drove a MKVI 2.0Tdi 110bhp Comfortline last week. No different to driving a MKV 1.9Tdi Comfortline so if you are hanging on to the car for a good while, take one of the good deals on a MKV. If you were only thinking of hanging on to it for 2 or 3 years I'd say the difference in resale value would make the MKVI more attractive.

That's an interesting point because one of the main reasons behind me getting new Golf is the resale value. I'll look into it tomorrow.

    Ahhhh okay, that makes sense.

So now I'm after a 1.4 TSi Mark VI 122bhp, anyone know a real world price on one of them?

    Golf Highline 1.4 TSI DSG 3dr 160bhp 27250
    Golf Highline 1.4 TSI DSG 5dr 160bhp 28000

Above figures are based on what I'd but them for with a volume discount, with a bit added on as hopefully the public won't be able to get quite the same deal.
