Norton 360 & Windows Update

    Hi,

I recently bought a HP laptop. I have Norton 360 on my other PC (and have another year left in my subscription) so I loaded it on to my laptop. But now "Windows Update" doesnt work. I have a feeling its got to do with the Norton as I downloaded a few updates before I loaded on Norton. Any ideas on how to fix it so "Windows Update" works again?

Do I have to reinstall Norton 360 again? And if I do this, will this mean, when I reinstall it, that its my "3rd" computer I loaded Norton onto? (I want to load Norton onto a 3rd computer later)

    Cheers,
    Regan

on the Norton 360 click the support button, find the live chat support, and someone will walk you through the troubleshooting.

I'd get rid of Norton and go with a freeware alternative, Norton isn't worth the hassle imo.

    Not Helpful.

The problem is an oddity - I've been using Internet Security Suite for 2 years with no hassle.

Again, use the inbuilt support options as I recommended earlier (Click Help&Support > One Click Support). Also, if you have any other antivirus or firewall programs that may be running on your machine (including Windows Firewall and Windows Defender) Try disabling them. Also be sure that the license you have is good for more than 1 PC. To be sure you have to log into your norton account at http://mynortonaccount.com using the information you registered with (email and password) and it will have saved your serial keys and information about when those licenses expire and on how many pc's they can be used:

    attachment.php?attachmentid=71501&stc=1&d=1233249466

(besides it only cost me $30 on sale to protect 3 PCs, which seemed more than reasonable than your average pay through the nose fee)

I was replying to the OP not you.

Lots of people stick with Norton as it comes pre installed on a lot of machines and think it's the best protection available when it isn't.

Lots of problems can be avoided including such like this by using alternative anti virus software. The OP may or may not find that helpful but in fairness it's not up to you to decide.

And the OP has another year of protection.

The Evaluation License that comes with the PC is good for 30 days. The OP has apparently purchased a 1-year (non-refundable) license. So again, its not helpful. Unless you are offering to refund the OP his $50 worth of software. The charter is quite clear on this: part 6

The length of the license won't make it run any smoother. I've seen PC's been brought in for repair with the sole cause being Norton so it may or may not be helpful. Again not really up to you to say leave that to the Mods.

i totallly agree with this post

if i paid €80 for a 1.2 polo and a mate offerered me a free golf gti, i'd stick with the polo because i had paid good money so that i can drive it!!!!!

    NOT

€80 or not i want speeeeeeed

norton is pushed on everyone who buys pcs, either by manufacturers preinstalling it, or by the sales man telliing you "its the best" or a funny one i often hear is when they say that "it will fix that problem for you"

anyone who mentions norton should be informed that their pc would be at least twice as fast if they just remove it, but you should try to help the person fix their problem too

That by the way is a terribly misleading remark, but this isnt a discussion on the pro's and cons of Norton (or the features offered by 360 2.0 vs. free AV software, like online file backup). If you like, you can bump this. But this thread is about windows update and Norton 360.

edit: in said thread you say

norton was very good about 4 years ago, i had norton corp 10, on all my pcs and never had a problem with it

since then i have made a career out of removing it of pcs, its like a free upgrade to your pc

but now this norton 2009 is out and its dirt cheap, and must be the fastest antivirus out there,

its €27 and you can put it on 3 computers
the daily scan only scans new or changed files
the updates are tiny i seen some that were 2kb, it checks every 15mins and take about 1 sec to download and apply them

so i think the whole remove norton and install avg to fix all problems day is coming to an end

....but why would you use it over a free antivirus

i think norton should at least give the first years subscription free to try and get customers back that the peeved off for 4 years

Hindsight is a bitch :pac: btw as far as your last comment, they usually give discounts in subsequent years to retain your business, rather than the other way around. First year I paid I dunnohowmuch (it was a gift along with the whole laptop) but the 2nd year cost $30 for 3 pcs. A fair bit lower than the front-end retail price.

Anyway the money is spent, that removes the why not use a free AV argument, so lets try and fix it.

    oh okay (spoilsport) ;)

op here is the first result when i google norton 360 windows update
    http://norton.lithium.com/norton/board/message?board.id=Norton_360&thread.id=2869
sounds like re-installing it fixed same problem for this guy, sure if you have a problem on a 3rd pc i'd imagine a quick phone call would resolve that

still glad hes aware that norton isnt some godsend like retailers would have you belive
    :p

    Right Lads,

I chatted to someone on the norton online help who pretty much told me it wasnt Norton that was causing the trouble. I uninstalled Norton and I still couldn't download updates. I was still getting the '8024402C' error. Just reinstalled Norton again and still not able to download updates
I have Windows Firewall and defender turned off.

    Any ideas??

thats microsofts reply to the error code. If you had uninstalled norton and it still wasnt working, then im not sure.

    try this

Go into Internet Explorer. Select Tools and go to the Connections Tab and select LAN Settings.

Check "use a proxy server" and fill in the proxy server as 209.55.33.101 and use port 80. Then try to update again.

even if you payed 100 euro for it, i would take it off, bloted program,, that is a hassle, and rubbish at removing spyware, which is alot more common than viruses,

these free software programs are alot better, although need to uninstall norton, if you want to use avg,

    http://www.download.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=avg+free+8&tag=srch&searchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows&filter=platform%3DWindows

and malwarebytes, brillant free anti-spyware program.

Tried this..no good unfortunately. There are 27 updates waiting to be downloaded. I think they are all for Microsoft Office 2007.

Have you tried deleting all temporary internet files and deleting your cookies?

I had something similar using XP at one stage.

Whether Norton is sh**te or not. Its not causing the problem, i thought it was but it isnt. I uninstalled it and I still had the problem
