    Hi Guys,

I'm a beginner in the world of cycling and I'm realy keen to get into it to do the triAthy in May. I'm joining a club soon but I would realy like to buy a bike before I do. As a complete novice I know next to nothing about bikes. I have figured out that a road bike is good but that's about it!

I'd be happy to buy one second hand but I wouldnt have a clue if it was in any way good value or a sensible purchase.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? For example, what should I be looking for in a basic but decent bike that would do me for training and an olympic distance triathlon?

I would realy appreciate any advice you could give me. :)

The most important thing is getting the right size. It sounds silly but its really common to see newbies riding the wrong size bike..Usual rule is to take 10" off your inside leg. Also very important is that the lenghth of the bike is correct. This can be adjusted with the stem.

Most important thing is the frame. The groupset can always be changed at some stage. Dont let some guy in a shop sell you a really expensive bike.Allow for getting all the clothing and other bits and pieces.

Finally dont cycle in the dark unless well lit up..Motorists in Ireland give no leeway to cyclists..

The lads in the cycling forum are generally pretty good when it comes to giving advice on what to buy.
A lot of it will be down to your budget though. You can spend as much as you want but for a new bike you'll probably be looking at 4 to 500 at least.
