    Hi all,

Hope you can help me, I was planning a trip for August for the wife and the in-laws and was considering ryanair-ing it into Girona/Barcalona. I know nothing about the area and was wondering if anyone could recommend a decent seaside resort near there...... Not looking for anything too hectic, the only child is 2 so no need for kids stuff either, just a nice beach with pubs and restaurants.

    Many thanks for your help......

Salou is about a 2 hrs drive from Girona, its a nice road/motorway the whole way down. Salou itself is your typical spanish resort with lot's and lot's of pub's, restraunts and shops. Beach is nice enough.

Google is your friend in these situations;).

We stayed in a resort called Calella de Palafrugell about ten years ago. It's within easy walking distance of another resort called Llafranc. Nice fishing villages with a couple of bars and restaurants and lovely sandy beaches, and that's about it. I remember it being very quiet and relaxing with very little nightlife beyond the restaurants and bars.

It's about 30 miles from Girona airport. You'd probably need to hire a car to get there. I seem to remember that the bus service was infrequent.

Me'n'FunkyMa did 2 weeks in Blanes, last September - a good size town, with a nice beach, restaurants, bars, etc. We hired a car, and drove up along the coast, through Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, San Feliu, and on up to l'Estartit. I particularly liked the look of Tossa, and will probably try to have a holiday there, in the future. As a bonus, it's less than 20 miles from Girona. :)

We stayed here (campsite) two years ago, it's in the South of France but only about a half hour from Girona airport.

Beautiful beach - spotlessly clean and the town itself had plenty of pubs (for you) and markets for herself.

Would go back in half a heartbeat if I could.

PS: On the way up from the airport you will pass some duty free shopping on the border - great for cigs, drink etc..........

was here myself last year diving, nice spot, stayed here:
http://www.novarahotels.com/eng/alga-links.asp - nice little hotel and good grub.

you will need a car, from girona it's only about 40 mins. Girona is a lovely city also. Bear in mind, August will be very busy. Sept would be better if you can manage it. Bring a snorkel and mask, great sealife around the little habour.
Avoid Cadaques, bit of a kip imho.

I forgot about Tossa de Mar - we've stayed there twice. The old town is really lovely and there's loads of great restaurants. The beach is very good too - www.tossacostabrava.com .

The only downside is that a lot of middle-aged English and German tourists go there - it's not particularly lively. Still, it's a good spot for a family holiday.

I hope you have not booked anywhere yet, Iv gone on holidays in Sant feliu de guixols my entire life. I couldn't think of a better place for you. Im 22 yrs old and i love the town. Pretty, Very Catalan, No English lager heads to be seen, just well dressed Catalans and French ....

type sant feliu de guixols into google images or just check out their official site. Lots of lovely restaurants and walks. And if you want a bit of Spanish Nightlife head into Playa D'aro , which is just 3 kms away. Place has got it all for people that dont fancy a holiday of getting hammered every night.
Better yet , sant feliu is just 20 mins from girona airport , usually 40 euro taxi.

You'll come home dying to go back , and prob will want to buy a house there...........I love Sant feliu :-)
    Best of luck

I'm also going to Girona next month. The above suggestions look good. Will be arriving really late at the airport so will probably get a taxi to the nearest resort. If anybody has any other suggestions, please let me know as i've only booked flights and i'm still researching :)

It always surprises me to see that so many of my fellow Irish expect buses/public transport to be made available just to suit them at major airports in mainland Europe....particularly those who have driven and parked their own cars at Dublin, Cork etc.....

A search on the web will discover where all those buses parked on the right as your exit Gerona airport go.........

There is one excellent service provided to get you to Perpignan, four times a day linking in with most Ryanair arrivals/departures. See frogbus.com and do note the special deals.
There are plans afoot to provide connecting services to Argeles-sur-mer and St Cyprien this summer.

By the way it costs one euro, (yes one euro,) to travel on the public bus down the coast from Perpignan almost to the border and around the area westwards .....

Good post oreilly09. Mr and Mrs Garbanzo are just back from a week based in San Feliu de Guixols ourselves. Great break. Fine spot. Quiet, which is what we wanted. One thing though . . . the windy coastal road to Tossa aint for the faint hearted and we had to have a couple of "sick stops" for the poor little garbanzos in the back of the car. Came back on the main road !

Pork and mushrooms is the one to order in Rey del Jamon in San Feliu. Deeee -lici-oso !

    :)

Theres lots and lots of seaside towns/resorts near Girona with bus transfers to most of them. We stayed for a week in Tossa de Mar a few years ago. Hotel was about 10 minutes walk from beach, had its own pool/bar plenty entertainment for 50 quid a room a night.
Loved the place, I must say, and you're within a boat or bus trip of a load of other small towns in the area. Spent a day in a waterpark near there as well, it could have been in Blanes but cant remember.

Thanks everyone for the helpful advice. I managed to squeeze us into, what I feel, is the last available room in Begur! We'll be staying there for 3 nights, then up to Montpellier for the weekend. Prices seem steeper in France so we may return back to one of the many places you guys suggested for the remaining couple of days of our hols.....Thanks again.

Be sure to make your way up to the battlements of the castle, above the town, for the views:)
