I wouldn't describe it as hard but the course is quite long (plenty of stuff to cover). If she puts the time into revision and enjoys it she'll be grand.

Easiest of the science subjects. Not including Ag science in that, but really, does that count?
Definitely a lot of ground to cover, but most of it isn't terribly complicated, except some of the plant biology stuff and Kreb's Cycle.

Yeah, that was my experience of it. I always felt I could always count on it for points compared to subjects where subjectivity/opinion of examiners swayed marks slightly. Not a bad choice at all :p

Biology is tough enough as a leaving cert subject but if she needs a science subject then it is by far the easiest of the 3 subjects.

I would say do it. It's very easy to learn particularly if she has any interest in pursuing life sciences. The botany stuff isn't too difficult at all either. If she puts the time in it can be a pretty handy one to ace for points.

    Its not hard

It's usually (depending on the student) easier to learn that the other science courses as it's generally more concrete, more intuitive. Not so many conceptual hurdles to jump. In terms of content, there's a lot in there.

There's a lot to cover but there isn't any particularly difficult concepts. In my own experience, it seems to be marked fairly easily as well!!

As far as the leaving cert. science modules are concerned:

Biology is ideal for anyone who is good at learning things off by heart. There is a lot of information on the course which all needs to be committed to memory. As long as you can do this you will have no problem with biology as it is not a hard subject because there is not much understanding needed.

If your more of a logical thinker who is prefers to figure things out than learn things off by heart you might be better off thinking about taking physics or chemistry. Physics is particularily accessible for people who are very mathimathically minded and chemistry fall somewhere between the two.

I think it comes down to interest and enjoyment, I found biology absolutely simple, but I loved the subject, a few friends of mine, who would normally get A's or B's in most subjects just couldnt get their heads around it because I guess they didnt enjoy it. Tell her to flick through the text book and see if she thinks she might find it interesting, taking an interest in a subject is half the battle! In terms of understanding I think most of the course is ok to get a grip on, and the exam lay out is handy enough too.

I would say it's almost too easy too. I loved it in Leaving Cert, to the extent that I went on to study Biology in University. However, I made the mistake of going to the UK and boy did I get a land! I struggled throughout all of first and second year, falling completely behind and not having a clue what was going on. Meanwhile, it was mostly revision for my friends from the UK. LC biology is a very, very basic overview of a few main topics.

I found chemistry a lot easier - it has a much shorter course. It's also marked easier because numbers are low and results are poor (maybe 7% A1). And I've heard Ag. described as very difficult.
