Do you tip the AA?

Right so I was considering calling the AA this morning for some car troubles. In the end I didn't have to but one that that stood out was that when I was speaking to someone before I was gonna call they suggested I should "throw the guy a tenner".

You what? Why the hell would I tip the guy a tenner if it's gonna take 90 mins for him to come out and this would have been my first call in 2 years of having AA cover.

Is it the done thing? Is that what people do?

I'd never even think of it; and while I'm sure most of the lads (and ladies, my mother had a female AA 'man' turn up once) would be more than happy to take it - they're not badly paid compared to people who are usually tipped...

You've already paid for the service.

Im not an AA member and many people are not, hence why the hound you in shopping centres.

Most people have insurance company cover.

    Would I tip them? Never.

They choose their profession to drive around and fix cars in fields and all weathers.

*fix being a loose term because most call outs are for keys locked and running out of petrol

Course they'd take it. I know my mam would tip the chap a few euro if he went out of his way to sort something out for her .. you'd expect a tip if you dealt with her too though ;)

THis applys to most industrys where tipping seems to be the norm. I guess I'm more wondering why you would or wouldn't with the AA. "You've already paid for the service" works in pretty much all cases where tipping is concerned.

It's nice to have AA as well as insurance cover I think .. I like to keep some things separate where possible.

I guess my problem is this... I come out of the shops and notice I have a puncture. I'm really not in the mood to change it myself so I decide to go off and get some lunch and call the AA. Why should I tip the chap? I paid for the service. Oh dear he got his hands dirty .. but I paid for it already.

I do hate tipping in general .. unless someones gone out of their way to sort you out. I guess I'm more lookign for the arguments from those who would suggest tipping .. and why in the case of the AA?

    thanks
