    So how the f**k do you get those four mounting screws off the old drive? I have nothing that'll do... why the hell could Apple not use normal philips head mounting screws? FFS, I can't get the new drive installed now... :mad:

    Are they ones that need a watchmaker style screwdriver or something?
    Haven't had a look yet, but will be upgrading the HD eventually.

    I think so - the head looks hex or star-shaped, it's too small for me too tell. It's really annoying cause I have the new HDD sitting here, everything backed up and good to go and no way to replace the damn thing. Thanks Apple!

    Apple's User Guide also has no info on the screws at all or tools needed, just refers to them as "four screws" that you need to take off and place on your new one, if it does not come with them... Helpful...

    IFixit should tell you what you need screwdriver wise

    Thanks, but it doesn't help - it only has guides for the plastic MacBooks, not the aluminum ones and the mounting screws I'm talking about were not used in the older ones... Anyone know what I need and where I might be able to find it?

    Yes, I do - thanks for that, I couldn't seem to find it. So it seems I need a T6 Torx screwdriver to get those mounting screws off. Anyone know if it's possible to pick one up in Dublin somewhere?

    Thanks. I see online that Maplins (at least in the UK) seem to carry different sets - I'll try them later and failing that, I'm not too far from George's street anyway...

    My white Macbook DOES have Torx screws for the HD cradle.

    yup it's a T7 Torx screwdriver you need, most of the guides told me for my black macbook that i needed a T6 torx, i went and bought a set from T20-T6 and T7 was the best fitting one as T6 was too small.

    it's not just apple who use these types of screw, nearly every electronics company does it. Torx head screws are actually quite common, well compared to say those triangle headed screws.

    You have to like their sense of humour (or humor) over at ifixit:
    Step 5

    * Opening the battery latch.
    * For those hurt by the financial crisis, a coin is no longer required.

    It is a T6 after all that's needed - managed to get a set of 3 bits, T6, T7 and T8 which I can use with my existing screwdrivers. Swapped the drives and installing Leopard now - unfortunately, Time Machine is not playing ball: I formatted the drive with Disk Utility from the Leopard DVD and tried to restore my full backup but it doesn't see the new drive so I had to start a clean Leopard installation and I'll restore the backup when it's done... Almost there :).
