    Hi folks,
I am trying to start up pc. When it boots up, it goes all the way to the log in screen, then turns off and repeats the entire process. Is there anything I can do? That is as good as I can describe the issue.

    Thanks for your help.

Did you hit, let fall Pc recently?

If not attempt to access your desktop by turning on your pc and tapping F8, this is will bring you to a few options onc which will be Safe Mode, attempt to access your computer using safemode. If this doesnt help. Start up your pc again by tapping F10, here you will find an option to restore you C drive, bear in mind it will delete everything and restore it to the factory condition, is this installation fails at any point then you have a hard drive failure and if under warranty you should return it. Keep me informed if any of the above are of help.

Thanks for the advice. Alas, the problem persists.

F8 would not give me the option of a Safe Start-up and F10 showed no problems. I tried running the Windows diagnostics as well but to no avail.

If there is anything else I can try, I would appreciate the input.

Is this a new build?? Or is it an old PC that has suddenly developed this problem?

Does it take long to boot?
Does it just reboot when you get to log on screen or is it when you attempt to log on it reboots?

Throw out as much info as you can, every little helps us diagnose the problem.

As the poster above suggests your first step should be to try and get it to boot into safe mode see link below

    Two probable causes:

    Harware/device driver problem
    - Install any new devices lately?
    - Update any drivers (try rolling them back).
    - PC take a knock?

    Overheating issue
    - Fans clogged with dust? Try opening her up and cleaning with compressed air

You might want to try this if all else fails:-

    Perform a CMOS reset

    This is what happens:
    1. Turn on PC
    2. PC boots up as normal to the Windows log in screen i.e. my login, my bro's login etc
    3. This screen is available for 5 to 10 seconds and then it restarts the process over again. Each of the login icons are available to select and if you are quick enough you can start entering the passwords.
    4. During the boot process, if I hit one of the function keys and go to the alternate menus i.e. [F8] Enter BIOS etc., then the PC will stay functioning for as long as I am in those menus .

The PC has been sitting idle for almost 6 months. It has not taken any knocks that I can think of.

I am not totally au fait with the inner workings of PCs so some, make that most, of what you are suggesting is a little bit out of my range.

What I am basically looking for is:
    a. a possible quick fix
    b. something I can do without destroying the thing
    c. enough information not to get shafted if I bring it for repair.

I wish I could be more helpful with the description. If all else fails I will try to video what is happening and post it here.

Thank you for all of your help.*

If you have the original operating system cd (windows xp) you could repair the existing intallation, thats if the xp installation is found. if it is not found then you would have to reinstall the operating systems from scratch. you can do this by booting from the xp disc, then selecting to install xp and not go into the recovery console, then the cd will search for an existing install of xp, and if it finds it you then have the option to repair the existing installation. just be careful to select the right options here. hope this helps....

I've just had a similar problem, although with mine I wasn't even getting as far as the log in screen it was just freezing at the Dell logo, turned out that my problem was a knackered printer, once the usb connection to the printer was unplugged the problem was solved!

So if you have anything connected to your PC disconnect them all, and try a different keyboard and mouse in case their cables have been damaged.

The fact the PC stays running in the BIOS menus suggests it's not due to overheating the cpu etc.

I doubt it's the same Issue as Do-More's as the PC does manage to pass the POST screen but for the purpose of troubleshooting it may be worth unplugging all unnecessary hardware from the machine.

I would suggest that because it only fails when it gets to the Log on screen that it is a dodgy install of some application, corrupted windows dll or bad drivers.

I assume the boot into safe mode didn't help so that would mean it's not an application as they won't be started in safe mode.

I would do as suggested by quaidox and try running a windows repair. This will rule out a dodgy windows dll, which means the most likely culprite after that would be dodge drivers

I would like to give a big thanks to all for your help. Alas I still cannot get the damned thing to run. The owner of the PC has decided to go the professional-help route. I will save all of these little tips for future reference.

Mods you can lock this thread. Thanks.
