No Jeff in either week? In the ring anyway.

I see MVP and Matt Hardy are full on in their new alignments.

Good to see MVP winning and hopefully the general crowd happy to cheer him on. US Championship could go his way if he is getting good reactions from the crowd which going by their reactions towards his exit in the Royal Rumble looks promising.

More detailed spoilers, Matt explains himself!!:D
    Dark match:

Kung Fu Naki beat Zach Ryder

It was a fun little opener. Oddly enough, Curt Hawkins showed more personality working the crowd than Ryder.

    Smackdown taping (airing 1/30/09)

Matt Hardy was introduced without any entrance music (guess they haven't picked heel music for him yet). He brought with him the chair that he hit Jeff with. He sat in the chair and cut a Jericho-esque serious promo. Long (but good) promo short, he did what he did because he was tired of the burden of being responsible for Jeff, both personally and professionally. He also said that he might be accused of being behind all of Jeff's incidents, but no one can prove it. The only hint of jealousy that he exhibited was that he said that the fans share the blame with Jeff because they always prefers the screw-up no matter what he did to make them like him. The best line in the promo was as follows:

"If my survival requires Jeff's destruction; so be it."

    R. Truth beat TBK

Killings came through the crowd 5 feet from my son and I, so that was cool. Before the match Zeke stood in between Killings and Kendrick (with Kendrick taunting Killings non-stop, which was pretty funny since he had to keep jumping up and down in order to see over Jackson's shoulder in order to see him to taunt him). The ref tossed out Jackson. The match itself was pretty decent.

    MVP beat Chavo

Chavo's entrance was a little amusing to me because there was a dead time of about 2 minutes after the first match, only to have the silence broken by Chavo's music, which apparently most of the crowd viewed as a big letdown. The match itself was a pretty standard Chavo match, which means that it was at least solid.

After the match, Tazz interviewed MVP (while Chavo laid in the ring behind them the whole time ). Basically, MVP said he is back on track and intends to get his US title back. It wasn't until MVP went to the back that Chavo got up, pantomiming that MVP got lucky that one time.

    Umaga beat JWY

This was a fun squash, but oddly enough Umaga did a lot of face mannerisms (including looking for crowd approval to do his big spots) while beating down a face.

Undertaker beat Mark Henry for a spot in the Elimination Chamber.

It was a pretty decent big man match. Highlights included Henry reversing Old School into a bear hug. Eventually Taker chokeslammed Henry and finished him with the Hell's Gate.

Edge and Vickie did a promo, including Edge busting out a new 5 second pose where he and Vickie sucked face while he held up the WWE title. Big Show interrupted. He picked picked Vickie up in a big hug and clapped at Edge. Edge and Vickie beat a hasty retreat while Big Show waited for his match.

Big Show beat Festus for a spot in the Elimination Chamber

Those big boys were smacking the crap out of each other in this match. It ended with Show knocking Festus out with his punch. After the match, Show chokeslammed Jesse.

HHH beat Great Khali and Vladimir Kozlov for a spot in the Elimination Chamber

It was a match of different stories. When Khali was selling HHH clipping his knee outside the ring, it was a good match. When HHH was selling, leaving Kozlov and Khali to their devices, it was also decent. When Kozlov was selling the Brain Chop, HHH and Khali kind of stunk. Add to that the fact that the Pedigree on Khali looked like crap, sucking heat from the finish.

    Smackdown taping (airing 2/6/09)

Kozlov wins a 14 man battle royale to get the last spot in the Elimination Chamber

Scotty Goldman, Kung Fu Naki, Shelton, MVP, Hawkins, Ryder, Carlito, Primo, R Truth, TBK, and Jesse all came to the ring with no introduction. Apparently Chavo forgot that he was going to be in the match, because he tore ass from the backstage area (not down the ramp like everyone else) to get into the ring.

The fireworks then go off, and Kozlov and Khali are the only ones to get a proper introduction. Vickie then comes out and announces that Jeff Hardy will get his title rematch in the Elimination Chamber, meaning that the winner of the royale gets the last spot in the Chamber.

Khali eliminated several people (including Hawkins and Ryder together), while Kozlov was made to look like a beast, eliminating half of the field. He even overcame the 3-on-1 odds that Truth and the Colons used against him at the end.

Backstage, Grisham interviewed Hurricane Helms to get his reaction to what Matt did to Jeff. Helms said that he was surprised, but maybe he shouldn't have been. He said that Matt had always had an ego, but he showed who he must have always been: an egotistical jerk. He said that since Jeff was not there to dispense justice on Matt, he was going to find him and do it for Jeff.

Matt came to the ring without intro music again. He said that Helms did not have to go looking for him since he is not about to hide from him. He called Helms out. Helms came out, and got destroyed by Hardy in pretty short order. They may have even introduced a new finisher for Matt to close it out. Matt sat Helms on the mat, locked his arms up in a Rings of Saturn-type of hold that left one of Matt's arms free. Matt proceeded to repeatedly elbow Helms in his unprotected head until a couple of officials came out to break it up, which if he uses that to get a series of referee decisions rather than giving his opponents the opportunity to kick out of a finisher or resist a submission hold could be a cool heel finisher.

Shelton came out and cut a promo on MVP. The highlight was Shelton saying that MVP should change his name to VPM, Very Payton Manning, since he will always choke when the big match comes. My son and I then would always chant VPM during every MVP chant afterwards.

MVP beat Shelton in a non-title match.

Like all of their other matches, this was quite good. Not much to add beyond that. The finish was neat, with them hitting their heads together, with MVP recovering faster, allowing him to hit the Drive Bye.

Miz, Morrison, and TBK beat R Truth and the Colons

This was a good match as well. Miz did not do much (I think he took all of two bumps) because Kendrick kept stealing tags from Morrison intended for the Miz. The finish came when Miz distracted Truth, allowing Kendrick to hit The Kendrick for the win.

Backstage, McCool started picking on Eve (this may have been on the first taping). It ended with Eve slapping McCool pretty solidly.

    McCool beat Eve Torres

Eve looked AMAZING in person. McCool (and later Maria)looked unhealthy. Eve also did not look that green in this match. In the end, McCool locked in the Heel Hook for the win. Maria ran out to chase her off at the end of the match.

There was a backstage segment that started with Edge freaking out about defending the title in the Elimination Chamber. Vickie tried to make him feel better by telling him that she believed in him. Big Show then came in. Apparently neither were overly excited to team up. Edge told Show that if he walked out on him or did not do his job, then Vickie would pull him out of the Elimination Chamber match, though Vickie insisted that it would not be necessary.

    Umaga beat Kung Fu Naki

See the JWY squash of the previous taping.

HHH and Undertaker beat Edge and Big Show

Big Show did most of the damage for his team. This was a pretty good match. The end came when Show came in when HHH had Edge down, chokeslammed HHH, picked up Edge, and picked up Edge and told him to pin HHH. Edge responded to the order by shoving Show, which prompted Show to hit Edge with the Knockout Punch. As Edge laid there HHH tagged in Undertaker. UT picked up Edge and hit the Tombstone for the pin, while Show stood on the outside watching.

The dark main event was originally scheduled to be a WWE title match between HHH, Kozlov, and Jeff Hardy. It was later changed to put Edge in Kozlov's spot. As recently as Monday night the announced match was Edge defending the belt against Jeff in a cage match.

Anyways, as Edge laid in the ring playing dead the ring crew (with HHH's help) set up the cage. HHH sat at the announcers' table with a kid I assumed was with the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Edge was hilarious as he woke up and realized that he was in the cage. Big Show came out and announced that since we were promised a cage match, he was going to give us one. He beat Edge from pillar to post until Chavo came out and interfered. As Show was busy chokeslamming Chavo Edge made his escape. HHH chased down Edge, tossed in into the cage, and then threw him back in so that Show could hit him with a chokeslam as well to end the night.

    Top pops:

    1) Undertaker
    2) HHH
    3) R Truth
    4) Umaga
    5) tie between Big Show and MVP, but only because Show worked much of the show as a straight heel.

    Most heat:

    1) Vickie, BY FAR. I had trouble hearing her over the boos.
    2) Edge
    3) Matt Hardy (almost as much heat as Edge, but the crowd apparently did not know how to react to his beat-down of Helms)
    4) Every other heel.

This may sound like a stupid question so dont eat me for it but.........
Is Matt Hardy not supposed to be on ECW? i mean why does he keep appearing on Raw or Smackdown...like miz and morrison aswell i suppose. Does the draft not mean anything really or why only ecw wrestlers appearing on these other shows???

Dont forget ECW signed "contracts" with both Smackdown and Raw to lend out Superstars and also to take Superstars from Raw and Smackdown to ECW.

Watching this Matt promo on SD right now, he's not letting himself down by any means.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,054 ✭✭✭D.Q

I thought the matt promo was quite good.. if a bit over the top with the slideshow and all.

The HHH-Koslov-Khali match was rotten. Khali is actually painful to watch sometimes, and THAT pedigree was one of the worst executed moves I have seen for quite some time.

Seemed kinda pointless, the big show v festus, I mean was there ever a chance of Festus getting a title shot!?

Yeah. Completley over produced. Matt was good though. I like him better as a heel.

Nah Helm has being buried recently he wont get near the PPV. Matt will either have the night off or get involved in the chamber.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,296 ✭✭✭✭gimmick

Okay, Koslov won the right to enter the EC at NWO. Now unless he wins the thing outright, which he won't, he is going to lose his undefeated sreak. Am I the only one who feels this will the such a huge huge wasted oppurtunity?

Or, will WWE revisionism hit in and they will say "Koslov has never been beaten in singles competition".

    Poor short sighted booking imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,027 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

Um..Kozlov has lost a couple of times now in triple threat matches but they still use the "unbeaten in singles competition" ...Survivor Series he lost triple threat...against triple H and Khali on Smackdown he lost a couple of weeks ago too

But he has never been pinned or submitted. To be pinned or submitted in the Chamber (which, theoretically, he would have to be unless he wins) would be a bit of a waste.

It still won't be considered a loss for him in terms of his single matches record.

But he will have been pinned, or submitted, so no matter how you dress that up, he has been defeated. I know we are only splitting a hair on it, but i think it is a major wasted oppurtunity for him to go on an unstoppable run over the midcarders, only eventually someone gets a massive rub by actually being the first to pin him.

My guess is Trippers will be the one to eliminate him anyway.

Exactly, in multiple man matches where he loses but is not pinned he can still go on, as he has never been pinned or submitted. But they can't dodge it (logically) if he is pinned or submitted in the Chamber.

I agree with you, but I don't think the WWE will treat this as an end to his undefeated streak (where single's matches is concerned).

    ...And therein lies my problem.

That being said as well, I am sure WWE do not care what the 30+ demographic thinks as long as the PGites are happy :)

What they could do is have him submit and claim he's never been pinned. Or have 'Taker beat him with Hells Gate and Koslov does a Kurt Angle on it and claims he was beaten by an illegal hold and it does not count. (Is it still banned by the way, I know he uses it but was it ever officially unbanned)

I think we are meant t believe when Vicky brought him back she lifted the ban on the move. He done it a few weeks ago on Shelton I think as well.
