Hi folks, what yas think of this deal?
My current car is a 03 VW Passat TDI 86,000 genuine miles.

Ive been shopping around since the new year as id like to come up 3-4 years on the new passat.
I came across this car as the chap is giving me more for my car than anywhere else i tried.

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volkswagen/Passat/2.0-140b/200902191450419/advert

He will change for 9k, I had a figure of 10-12 k in my head to spend so am pretty happy with this offer as he is giving me 7-8 k for my own car which along with another dealer [for a 07 nissan primera 1.6 petrol 20k miles] is the best offer ive had and seems the best deal ive been offered.
Up to this ive had offers from 3.5 to 6 k on various cars.

Ive checked out this Passat fully on cartell and through my own mechanic who does all servicing on this guys cars.
It also has full service history which ive studied.

The car itself is a real belter to drive, oodles of torque, comfort to die for, very refined, lots of extras ,i really like this car,im seriously considering purchasing.
    What yas all think?

That car looks a nice spec. Looks like the equivalent of an Irish Sportline (the wheels) but its got cruise and heated seats which would be nice. €9k to come up 3 years really isn't too bad at all IMHO. I know if you sold your own and bought in UK you'd do it cheaper and all that but for some people this isn't always possible.

In the current climate, I think you should probably take it. 3k per year is your cost to change. That is reasonable enough I suppose
However did you research the cost of buying same car in UK/North? A lot of people here on boards swear you can do it so much cheaper that way.
Either way I reckon you are doing OK.

    Thanks for feedback folks.
I havent looked into the North or UK too much if im being honest, would i really be saving much and would i get a similar offer for my own?
Also i havent tried to sell my own privately as there are literally thousands of similar cars out there for sale.
Also my car is 800 miles overdue a service which the dealer is aware of, also NCT is due in early March so it will cost me a few quid to sort them out where as this chap is taking my car in its current form [not a big deal i know] but still worth mentioning.
Ive had very good feedback about this chap and his cars ,hes being very fair to me i feel.

Your instincts are correct on this one. Anything you save on buying in UK would have to be taken off the selling price of yours to get rid of it. Couple that with the hassle of going to UK and advertising yours it is probably no advantage. Go for it before the dealer changes his mind. When new that spec Passat was close to 40K here in 2006.

100 euro deposit paid this morning for him to hold onto it for me :) will pay a visit to bank later for another 900 for the 1k deposit he is aking for to set the bal in motion with vrt etc.
Then its just a case of him getting it serviced and ready.
Ill probably wait till Monday to collect so as to start a new month for tax etc.

Thanks again folks for feedback, my gutt feeling was its a nice deal plus i fell for it once i drove it,i just wanted to run it by a few more peoples minds before i hand over the 900 euro this evening :)

Have one myself 2.0TDI Comfortline. There's plenty of torc and it's a very comfortable car to drive. I had a 2004 A4 before it and I much prefer the Passat to drive.
It looks like the SE model which is very similar spec to the Irish Comfortline model.
    Best of luck with it.

best of luck with the new car. You're getting a good deal the way things are at the moment!

    +1

I have a 06 2.0TDI DSG Comfortline and it's a great car. I had a 02 1.9 TDI (130 BHP) before this and the newer model is a huge improvement and, as it's a bigger car, really benefits from that extra 0.1L :)

I considered an equivalent A4 at the time but went for the Passat as it was bigger (especially in rear seat area), and felt more modern interior-wise than the Audi I was looking at.

    Haven't looked back since.

Ive seen first hand 2 people bringing in 06 passats from uk for €11,000 total.
One was base spec but other was the se. (€11,400)
Thats what they can be had for but add in possibly 2 journeys to uk, hotels, planes, boat, car checks, spending money, two day off work possibly and another to go to the revenue to pay vrt and thats worth a couple of grand of anyones money.
Then there is the hassle of selling your car and you will probably get 5,500 for it.
So say you spend 12000 total on car, get 5,500 for yours, thats 6500 to change compared to 9,000 at the dealer but its without all that hassle & time. Id go with the dealer in this case unless you have alot of time on your hands to be going to uk

I recently drove a 2.0 litre TDi Highline Passat and to be honest I was very disappointed with it.

The turbo lag was very noticeable along with the clatter and to be honest the fit and finish left alot to be desired. My Focus felt alot more enjoyable to drive too.

...if you can sell it at all, that is.

    +1 on the dealer, tbh.

I have an 2.0 TDI highline, new since 2008. I love it. I had a 2.0L Accord petrol before that, which I liked also.

The engine has bags of power. It has 6 gears, and I have to remember to look at the tacho to see if I'm in 4th or 6th.

There is absolutely no clatter from the engine, as previously advised.

I could spend 350 euros and get it 'bricked' up to 170 hp (remember the joke about bricking the 3 day camel up to 5 days, but I digress!!!!)

Love the car and its really nice to drive

Jaysus, i suggest you test drive another to be honest.

The car im buying is almost as quiet as a petrol car while accelerating, its barely audible when idle.
Its far quieter than my existing 1.9 TDI 130 bhp which was already quieter than most diesels ive drove,it isquieter too than any other diesel i tested since the turn of the year

    those being

    Petrols - 07 Primera, 07 Avensis,08 Mondeo,08 Ovtavia.08 Corolla
    Diesels - 07 Superb,08 Octavia,07 Avensis,08 Mondeo,Peugeot 407

As for turbo lag, i didnt notice any in this or indeed any diesel i drove.
The car has bags of power and torque and i also question your claim of the poor fit and finish.

So your 1.9 TDi is quieter than 2 other cars with the exact same engine? I see... It's a fact that the 1.9TDi is louder than nearly every other engine on the market today. The 2 litre TDI is still loud. If you think it's as quiet as a petrol then you need your ears cleaned. Or maybe not, better off not hearing it! VW insulate well, but it's a loud engine.
Still though, best of luck with the purchase, its a decent car, despite the engine noise! The insulation hides it very well. You got a decent deal too.

I've a 2.0 TDi in a SEAT altea and the only thing I can hear is the road, which is due to the wide tyres and 18 alloys. The 1.9 Tdi in my 05 Van is also very quiet.. They are noisy when idle but then again, I like the sound of engines working. Werido I know.

I am ofcourse speaking about inside the car,you said yourself vw insulate very well :)
I assure you my ears are fine.

I have to say I never found my old 02 1.9 TDI Passat noticeably noisy in standard/motorway driving, and my current 06 2.0 TDI model would be quieter again.

As HashSlinging said, I can hear the road noise alright but like him I actually like to hear the engine working.. and the noise and acceleration when I put the foot down to overtake :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,413 ✭✭✭HashSlinging

The thing is im not sure any of the posters who post negative against the 1.9Tdi etc haven't owned a car with one or driven one for more that a short test drive.. I was in a 110bhp 00 passat with 300k miles and its still quiet, running strong. Worst of all its remapped and has been since 30k when the second owner (taxi driver) bought it, current owner got it for free.

Well my brother has an 02 Passat TDI 130 bhp 6 speed.
He bought it from ********* in Dublin, just before Christmas he went to sell it but the buyer done a cartell check and mileage discrepency was found.
Instead of the 50,000 he thought were genuine when he first bought it it turns out there was 130,000 miles on it.
The thing is the car drives as if it has only 50,000 miles on it when infact it has over 150,000 on it at this stage.
It was a genuine mistalke by the brother who is now seeking legal advice on the matter.
