Help with a driver

    Hi,

I've probably been bumbling through this in a way that'll make everyone here cringe, but here goes:

I have a Dell Inspiron E521, which I wiped several days ago by installing a new copy of XP Professional from a different disc - I don't think I got a disc with the computer a few years ago when I got it, and if I did, it's dead. The Restore stuff didn't work for some reason.

    So.

I had Windows reinstalled, which left the computer fresh as a breeze compared to its lumbering, barely functional, virus ridden self beforehand but obviously I was missing some drivers for stuff. Four devices needed drivers, and I got three, but what I'm left with is:

one device is showing up as "PCI device". I used the codes in the Details tab to figure out, on pcidatabase.com that it's Nvidia 6150 (for AMD).

I found drivers for this, but when I try to install them it says "Setup found no drivers compatible with your hardware".

    ?????

What am I supposed to do, if the driver for the (unrecognised) PCI device won't install!

Download a piece of software called drivermax. It should help you identify the device and get a driver for it.

I updated everything that Drivermax suggested, which advanced me from an unknown 'PCI device' in Device Manager to 'Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus'.

But it's still in 'Other Devices' and it still has a question mark beside it, and I still have no sound.

    I'm pretty baffled.

Try using Everest to identify the device, could be worth a go incase drivermax mis identified it too.

Dell quite obligingly put all their drivers on their website.

Just select your computer model and it will give the available ones

Install from it what you need and you should be able to work out which ones are left.

i was going to say that initially but the free version has been discontinued.

I think I upgraded various things from the basic model though... and I can't remember what, and what they were.

    Trying lavalsys now.

Nothing eats time like driver mysteries.
