Hi all, this is a bit of a long winded story but hopefully someone will be able to help me out.

OK basically I did my leaving cert in 2007. I applied for and got accepted into Electronic Engineering in UCC, which I ended up hating and totally falling behind in. As a result I dropped out before the 31st of January deadline so I was only eligable for half fees the next year.

Thats cool. I applied for Arts in UCC for this acedemic year which I was accepted into. I payed the fees for the first half of the year and that was sorted. It was a bit better this year, although I regretted not doing Computer Science as a full course (i picked computer science as one of my arts subjects and really enjoyed it).

OK so thats fair enough again. So November comes along and after getting some stuff checked out it turned out that I have cancer, Hodgkins Lymphoma to be exact and because of chemo and everything I need to get through it I had to come out of college naturally. I asked the fees administrator what the story was and she said that I should withdraw, apply again through the CAO for next year or whatever year I'm returning to education and theres a good chance that my fees will be waivered due to the fact that I'm ill.

OK so heres where the pickle comes in. I've never liked UCC. The first time round I thought it was just a once off, but this year I hated it even more. I've spent alot of time in UL this year and have absolutely fallen in love with the place and would love to go there once I'm better. The atmosphere is just so much better and the people are so much more fun and friendly. But does the situation I'm in mean that I can only have my fees waivered within UCC? Are University fees a state thing or an internal system within colleges? Is there any way that I would be able to switch courses or anything? Basically I'm asking is the there any way that I could go to UL but not have to pay fees again.

Also if anyone has any knowledge of special priviledges that people who've been ill get I would be grateful to hear. I heard before something like if you've been ill, you get priority in terms of getting the rooms in student accomodation that would be best for keeping in good health. Not too sure on that tho.

Anyway please let me know if ye can help, or if ye think this would be better answered somewhere else. Thanks in advance.
    Steve.
