    Hi

Wife and I have been living in the Uk for the last 8yrs. Bought a car 2yrs ago registered in my name. Wife is returning to Ireland but I am staying working in the UK.

Does the car have to be registered in her name for 6mths before she can bring it back and claim vrt exemption, or can I just transfer it into her name and register it straight away?

    Thanks

It will have to be in her name for six months before she moves back to get the vrt exemption.

She'll have to prove that the car has been registered to, and in regular use by her for the six months preceding the move. This means insured by her, etc.

looks like I might be better off buying something older and bringing it in, need something soon so can't wait 6mths and the vrt on the car is Euro14k !!!

Can't the OP just register the car in his name again on the Irish side? Since it's for his wife surely there's no problem with this? I don't know myself - just asking.

They're trying to stop people avoiding VRT by pretending to have lived in the UK, this isn't the case here.

Just change the car over yourself and insure the wife on it in IReland
    no worries there
