Airport is wireless network right?

I know I'm going to look like a twat but I am completely clueless about Airport or wireless network router stuff.

Here's my situation:
I currently use a 3pay USB gizmo, but I also have a PAYG o2 iPhone.

I was thinking of getting in some sort of broadband on a wireless network.. (Chrous/NTL?)
Will this work handy enough with Airport on my iMac/Macbook and iPhone?
(or would I need to get an Apple specific thingy?)

Sorry if it's a dumb question, and thanks in advance.

One more question.
My mum has an old g4 Powerbook with no Airport. I guess I would need to buy her an airport card thing? (USB?)

Yeh once you get broadband (from any service provider) you can connect a wireless router to enable wireless devices like your iPhone, Macbook etc. to connect to the net, you don't need it to be Apple specifc. Some broadband is advertised as "wireless" but this stands for the means by which you get it into your house i.e. as opposed to DSL (phone line) or cable (NTL)
